East Block by the escarpment / Le Block de l'Est par l'escarpement

Earlier this week, I took a long walk from Gatineau to Ottawa across the Alexandra Bridge. Since it was such a beautiful day, I took a lot of photographs as references for possible paintings or sketches. I also brought along my sketchbook but didn't want to stop and sketch because of the wonderful weather which encouraged me to walk forever (or as long as my old legs would permit).

Later in the week, I decided to make a sketch of one of the scenes - the East Block of the parliamentary buildings as seen from across the Rideau Canal locks. For the fun of it, I've also included a step-by-step explanation of just how I created this image.

Plus tôt cette semaine, j'ai pris une longue marche de Gatineau à Ottawa par le pont Alexandra. Comme il était un si beau jour, j'ai pris beaucoup de photos comme références pour des peintures possibles ou des croquis. J'ai aussi apporté mon carnet de croquis, mais je ne voulais pas arrêter et esquisser à cause du temps magnifique qui m'a encouragé à marcher pendant des kilomètres (ou aussi longtemps que mes vieilles jambes le permettent).
Plus tard dans la semaine, j'ai décidé de faire un croquis de l'une des scènes - l'Édifice de l'Est des édifices parlementaires comme vu à travers les écluses du canal Rideau. Pour le plaisir, j'ai aussi inclus une explication étape par étape, à quel point j'ai créé cette image.

It all starts with a sketch. I made an initial pencil sketch of the scene in my Fabriano Venezia sketchbook (90 lb. paper) and then used my fountain pen to ink the image (Noodler Ahab flex pen with Platinum Carbon black ink). I like the flex pen because it allows you to create either thin or thick lines (most modern fountain pens have fixed nib sizes). I also like the Platinum Carbon black ink because it is completely waterproof and allows you to paint over it without loosing the crispness of the line.

Tout commence par un croquis. J'ai fait un croquis de la scène au crayon dans mon carnet de croquis Fabriano Venezia (papier 90 lb), et puis j'ai utilisé mon stylo à l'encre pour créer l'image (stylo flexible Ahab de Noodlers à encre noire de Platinum Carbon). J'aime la plume flexible car il vous permet de créer aussi bien des lignes fines ou épaisses (les stylos-plumes les plus modernes ont des tailles de plume fixes). J'aime aussi l'encre Platinum Carbon parce qu'il est complètement imperméable et vous permet de peindre sans perdre la netteté de la ligne.

I then washed the sketch with some ultramarine paint. I was a little disappointed in the results although I should have been more aware. The paper isn't watercolour paper and couldn't absorb all the water - the paper warped and some of the paint even went through the paper. Despite wetting the paper before I applied the paint, the paper didn't absorb the paint in a uniform manner as would real watercolour paper. Again, this was my fault as I should have known better - but it did create an interesting pattern (which is part of the magic of watercolours - you never know exactly what may happen).

J'ai ensuite lavé le croquis avec un peu de peinture bleu outremer. J'ai été un peu déçu par les résultats, bien que j'aurais dû être plus conscient. Le papier n'est pas du papier aquarelle et ne pouvait pas absorber toute l'eau - le papier a gondolé et un peu de peinture est même allé à travers le papier. En dépit de mouiller le papier avant j'ai appliqué la peinture, le papier n'a pas pu absorber la peinture de manière uniforme comme du papier aquarelle. Encore une fois, c'était ma faute car je devrais avoir su mieux - mais il a créé un configuration intéressant (qui fait partie de la magie de l'aquarelle - on ne sait jamais exactement ce qui peut arriver).

 I mixed some grey using burnt sienna and indigo, and applied it to the building and the trees in the foreground. As I was on the shady side of the buildings, I wanted to darken it but not too much at this stage.

J'ai mélangé un peu de gris en utilisant terre de sienne brûlée et de l'indigo, et je l'ai appliqué au bâtiment et les arbres. Comme j'étais sur le côté ombragé des bâtiments, je voulais les assombrir, mais pas trop à cet étape.

I then continued to darken the building using the same grey paint and creating a sort of brick pattern.

J'ai ensuite continué d'assombrir le bâtiment à l'aide de la peinture grise et de créer une sorte de motif de brique.

The old copper roof of the building takes on a unique colour as it ages. One section was darker than the other, so I used some indigo mixed with grey to paint it.

L'ancien toit de cuivre du bâtiment prend une couleur unique à mesure qu'il vieillit. Une section était plus sombre que l'autre, alors j'ai utilisé de l'indigo mêlé de gris pour le peindre.

In the final step (at the top of this post), I continued to darken portions of the building using the indigo/grey. I also used ultramarine and indigo in the foreground to darken parts of the escarpment that were in shade. I also darkened the tops of the trees to convey the impression of many small branches. The sketch took me roughly between three and four hours to do. It's a little more than I would normally spend on a sketch but less than I would spend on a painting. 

As a sketch, I'm happy with the results although at some point in the future I may want to do further work on this image. For instance, I may want to incorporate more detail on the building or, if I was making it into an oil painting, I may want to roughen up the foreground a little more. It's all fun!

Dans la dernière étape (en haut de ce post), j'ai continué à assombrir les parties de l'immeuble en utilisant l'indigo/gris. J'ai aussi utilisé l'outremer et indigo pour assombrir des parties de l'escarpement qui étaient dans l'ombre. J'ai aussi assombri les sommets des arbres pour donner l'impression d'un grand nombre de petites branches. Le croquis m'a pris entre trois et quatre heures à faire. C'est un peu plus que j'ai l'habitude de passer sur un croquis, mais moins que je passerais sur un tableau.
Comme une esquisse, je suis heureux avec les résultats, bien qu'à un certain moment dans l'avenir, peut-être je voudriez faire d'autres travaux sur cette image. Par exemple, je pourrais intégrer plus de détails sur le bâtiment ou, si je voulais faire une peinture à l'huile, je pourrais rendre plus rugueux le premier plan. C'est tous amusement!

Backyard deck in winter / Terrace jardin en hiver

As George Harrison sang 'Little darling, I feel that ice is slowly melting; It seems like years since its been clear; Here comes the sun; Here comes the sun and I say its alright.'  Yes, it has been a long cold weary dark frustrating unrelenting winter this year.  Although the calendar reads SPRING, we are still in the grips of winter for a few more weeks, I fear. But the sun is getting much stronger. The maples are running and I've noticed that the ice is melting even if the temperature is below 0 C.  When spring really takes place here, it will be a joyous celebration.

Bien que le calendrier se lit PRINTEMPS, nous sommes encore en proie à l'hiver pour quelques semaines de plus, je le crains. Mais le soleil est beaucoup plus fort. Les érables sont en marche et j'ai remarqué que la glace fond, même si la température est inférieure à 0 ° C. Quand le printemps se passe réellement ici, il y aura une célébration joyeuse.

Full moon on Cayo Coco / La pleine lune à Cayo Coco

On our last evening in Cayo Coco, the full moon came out in all its glory. It was very bright and rose almost directly overhead as the night progressed. We decided to take a stroll on the beach in the late evening as we had done on previous occasions. Much to our surprise, there was no beach to walk on! The tide had risen as high as it could go. There was another younger couple walking in the surf, but being more cautious we decided against that idea.

Nous avons décidé de faire une promenade sur la plage en fin de soirée comme nous l'avions fait précédemment. À notre grande surprise, il n'y avait pas de plage à marcher sur! La marée avait atteint le plus haut qu'elle pouvait aller. Il y avait un autre jeune couple marchant dans les vagues, mais étant plus prudent, nous avons décidé contre cette idée.

Security station on beach / Station du sécurité sur la plage

Late one afternoon, I decided to walk along the beach and do some sketching. This white-washed security station caught my attention and I pulled up a chair to draw it. A guard was inside and came out to see what I was doing. He seemed pleased looking at the other sketches in my book and asked me if I had a studio. I explained that I was just an amateur and did it just for the love of drawing. He seemed to like this response.

À la fin d'un après midi, j'ai décidé de marcher le long de la plage et faire quelques croquis. Ce station de sécurité blanchis a attiré mon attention et j'ai tiré une chaise pour le dessiner. Un garde était à l'intérieur et est sorti pour voir ce que je faisais. Il semblait d'être heureux en regardant les autres croquis dans mon livre et m'a demandé si j'avais un studio. Je lui ai expliqué que j'étais un amateur et il l'a fait juste pour l'amour du dessin. Il avait l'air d'aimer cette réponse.

Mini-bar

All-inclusive resorts usually have a number of bars throughout the grounds.  This is a sketch of one small bar that I enjoyed. Although it didn't have a wide selection of drinks and wasn't open 24/7, it had the basics and was next to a quiet pool. Despite the fact that it was a 'free dispensary', I didn't notice any abuse.

Les hôtels tout compris ont généralement un certain nombre de bars à travers le terrain. Ceci est un croquis d'un petit bar que j'ai particulièrement apprécié. Même si elle n'a pas eu beaucoup de choix de boisson et n'a pas été ouvert 24/7, il y avait la base et était à côté d'une piscine tranquille. Malgré le fait qu'il s'agissait d'un «dispensaire gratuit», je n'ai pas remarqué les abus.

Underwater life / Vie sous-marine

One day, we took a catamaran/snorkelling excursion which headed past Cayo Romano towards a pristine beach next to a lighthouse. On the way, we stopped twice to do some snorkelling at two coral reefs. There were fish of all sizes and colours swimming among different types of corals and vegetation. It was stunning. Once I saw a school of bluish fish huddled together in a protective arrangement. I guess that they aren't completely used to having their home invaded. This is rough sketch of that moment.

Un jour, nous avons pris un excursion catamaran/plongée en apnée qui se dirigait passé Cayo Romano vers une plage immaculée à côté d'un phare. Sur la route, nous sommes arrêtés deux fois pour faire un peu de plongée en apnée à deux récifs coralliens. Il y avait des poissons de toutes les tailles et de couleurs entre les différents types de coraux et de la végétation. C'était formidable. Une fois que j'ai vu un banc de poissons bleuâtre entassés dans un dispositif de protection. Je suppose qu'ils ne sont pas tout à fait habitués à avoir leur maison envahir. Ceci est croquis de ce moment-là.

Catamaran

One afternoon, my wife and I took a local bus to go to Playa Pilar on Cayo Guillermo. The beach had the whitest sands imaginable, crystal clear water and an extremely gentle slope into the ocean.  There were all sorts of fish in the water that we would see from time to time including starfish.  While we were sitting on the beach, I made this quick sketch of a large catamaran which had just anchored.  The people on board were having their lunch and enjoying the lovely beach. Below I've included a photo of myself 'hard' at work' sketching.

Un après-midi, ma femme et moi avons pris un autobus local pour aller à Playa Pilar à Cayo Guillermo. La plage avait la plus blanche des sables imaginables, eau cristalline et une pente très douce dans l'océan. Il y avait toutes sortes de poissons dans l'eau que nous verrons de temps en temps, y compris les étoiles de mer. Pendant que nous étions assis sur la plage, j'ai fait ce croquis rapide d'un grand catamaran qui venait de mouiller. Les personnes à bord ont été en train de déjeuner et profiter de la belle plage. Ci dessous j'ai inclus une photo de moi-même "plein au travail" en faisant des croquis.

Cayo Coco, Cuba

The beaches at Cayo Coco were great. The sand was very fine and light in colour, and the slope into the water was very gentle. In the late afternoon, there were few people on the beach and the shadows grew larger and the colours intensified. It was a good time for sketching before returning to our room to prepare for supper. I made this simple sketch in a relative short amount of time - 30 or 40 minutes. My major challenges were once again strong winds that threatened to blow my page around and the elements that dried the paint quickly.

Les plages de Cayo Coco était super. Le sable était très fin et de couleur claire, et la pente dans l'eau était très doux. Dans l'après-midi, il y avait peu de monde sur la plage et l'ombre grandissait et les couleurs sont intensifiées. C'était le bon moment pour dessiner avant de retourner dans notre chambre pour se préparer pour le souper. J'ai fait cette simple esquisse dans peu de temps - 30 ou 40 minutes. Mes principaux défis ont été une fois de plus les vents forts qui menaçaient de faire sauter ma page et la chaleur qui séchait la peinture rapidement.

Cayo Coco, Cuba

I've just returned from Cayo Coco in Cuba, and will be posting some of the sketches that I made during my vacation over the next week or so. The weather there was, of course, summer-like lovely. Today in Ottawa-Gatineau, we're experiencing a winter storm with 20 cm of heavy snow. Its quite incredible to be able to switch between these two extremes within hours. Viva our modern technology!

This sketch is of some ocean view buildings which were overlooking the beach at the Melia Tryp Resort.  The trees and gardens there were very well maintained.  It was pleasant just to meander along the footpaths within the resort. My major challenge in sketching this and other images was to keep my page from being blown around due to the strong Atlantic winds. The paint also dried fairly quickly due to the heat and the wind. Its a different sort of challenge from sketching in sub-zero weather!

Je reviens tout juste de Cayo Coco à Cuba, et publiera quelques-uns des dessins que j'ai fait pendant mes vacances au cours de la prochaine semaine. Le climat y était, bien sûr, beau comme en été. Aujourd'hui, à Ottawa-Gatineau, nous vivons une tempête d'hiver de 20 cm de neige lourde. C'est tout à fait incroyable d'être en mesure de basculer entre ces deux extrêmes en quelques heures. Viva notre technologie moderne!
Cette esquisse est de certains bâtiments donnant sur la plage à l'hôtel Melia Tryp. Les arbres et les jardins y étaient très bien entretenus. C'était très agréable juste de promener le long des sentiers. Mon plus grand défi dans ce croquis et d'autres était d'empecher ma page d'être dispersées dans l'air en raison des forts vents de l'Atlantique. Aussi, la peinture a séché assez rapidement en raison de la chaleur et le vent. C'est différente de dessiner dans des températures sous zéro!

Crystal garden / Reflets de glace

The winter carnaval in Ottawa-Gatineau (known as Winterlude) began last weekend and runs every weekend throughout February. This week I visited Confederation Park to see the ice sculptures that are created for the festival.  As usual, they were spectacular.  Some small sculptures were arranged around a (former) water fountain and larger ones were placed in a large tent to protect them from the elements.  Among the smaller sculptures, I enjoyed the seahorses, the polar bear and the mystic hand. I tried to depict them in this illustration.  I find it a pity that such beautiful artwork simply melts away with the arrival of spring (or a mid-winter thaw).

Le carnaval d'hiver à Ottawa-Gatineau (connue sous le nom Bal de Neige) a commencé la semaine dernière et fonctionne tous les fins de semaine tout au long de février. Cette semaine, j'ai visité le Parc de la Confédération pour voir les sculptures de glace qui sont créés pour le festival. Comme d'habitude, ils ont été spectaculaires. Quelques petites sculptures ont été disposés autour d'une fontaine d'eau et les plus grands ont été placés dans une grande tente pour les protéger contre les éléments. Parmi les sculptures plus petites, j'ai aimé les hippocampes, l'ours polaire et la main mystique. J'ai essayé de les représenter dans cette illustration. Je trouve dommage que cette belle œuvre d'art se fond avec l'arrivée du printemps (ou un dégel de mi-hiver).

Chelsea cabin in winter / Cabane en hiver à Chelsea

This weekend, since the weather warmed up a little (it was only -15 C) my wife and I took a walk in the Gatineau Park at Chelsea, Quebec.  This is a trendy little community with a worldclass spa, boutiques, restaurants, and galleries.  Of course, the park is the absolute gem of this community and covers over 361.3 km² (140 sq miles). There's a short trail we like to stroll which takes us into the park and past the cabin in my painting and over a cedar footbridge (in the photo below).

Cette fin de semaine, puisque le temps s'est réchauffé un peu (il n'était que -15 ° C) ma femme et moi avons pris une promenade dans le Parc de la Gatineau à Chelsea, Québec. Chelsea s'agit d'une communauté à la mode avec un spa du calibre mondial, des boutiques, des restaurants et des galeries.  Bien sûr, le parc est le véritable bijou de cette communauté et couvre plus de 361.3 km ² (140 miles carrés). Plains of Abraham lookout / Belvédère sur les Plaines d'Abraham

This is a rough study for an oil painting that I've been planning.  The image is of a scene that I photographed last year when I was in Quebec City.  It was an overcast day with the possibility of snow and I took a walk with my wife on the Plains of Abraham near the Amoury.  This gazebo overlooks the St Lawrence River and the south shore.  It's a lovely site that would be worthwhile painting in every season.

Voici une simple étude pour une peinture à l'huile que je planifie. L'image est d'une scène que j'ai photographié l'année dernière quand j'étais à Ville Québec. C'était une journée nuageuse avec la possibilité de la neige et je me suis promené avec ma femme sur les plaines d'Abraham près du Amourie. Ce belvédère surplombe le fleuve Saint-Laurent et la rive sud. C'est un très beau site qui serait intéressant à peindre en toute saison.

Rideau Canal skating / Patiner sur le Canal Rideau

I have a new Stillman and Birn Beta sketchbook that I wanted to test and created this image.  The sketchbook is very well bound and feels solid; the paper is a lot whiter than my Moleskine and my Fabriano Venezia sketchbooks; and the paper is a thick 180 lbs (270 gsm).  The paper can take a lot of abuse and soaking without much warping or degrading.  I did notice that my Platinum carbon black ink took longer to dry on this paper than it did in the Moleskine or Fabriano sketchbooks.  Overall, I'm very impressed with this book and intend to try it out some more.

As for the image, this is a scene at the end of the afternoon on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa.  Right now it is -30 C. in Ottawa (about -40 C. with the chill factor) and so you can understand that I didn't sketch this on site or even in a moderately warm vehicle.  I took a picture and then used my imagination.  I have to admire the people who keep the ice in great condition - they flood it at night or remove any snow when needed and then polish the ice with small tractors that are equipped with rotating brushes on the front.  When you consider that the 'skating rink' is 7 km long and very wide at some points, this is a major accomplishment.  I'd like to say 'Hat's off!' but with the weather we are now experiencing, I think it would be wise just to give a sincere thanks.

J'ai un nouveau carnet de croquis de Stillman et Birn que je voulais tester et alors j'ai créé cette image. Le carnet est très bien bati et se sent solide;  le papier est plus blanc que mon Moleskine et mon carnet de croquis Fabriano Venezia; et le papier est épais de 180 livres (270 g).  Le papier peut prendre beaucoup d'abus et de trempage sans se déformer beaucoup. J'ai remarqué que mon encre noir de Platinum a pris plus de temps à sécher dans ce carnet qu'il ne le faisait dans mes carnets Moleskine ou Fabriano. Dans l'ensemble, je suis très impressionné par ce carnet et j'ai l'intention de l'essayer un peu plus.

Quant à l'image, c'est une scène à la fin de l'après-midi sur le canal Rideau à Ottawa.  À l'heure actuelle, il est -30 ° C. à Ottawa (alentour -40 C. avec le facteur de refroidissement) et vous pouvez donc comprendre que je n'ai pas dessiné en plein air ou même dans un véhicule modérément chaud.  J'ai pris une photo, puis j'ai utilisé mon imagination.  J'admire les gens qui gardent la glace en très bon état - ils inondent la glace durant la nuit ou ils enlevent la neige en cas de besoin, puis ils polissent la glace avec de petits tracteurs qui sont munis de brosses rotatives sur le devant.  Quand vous considérez que la «patinoire» est de 7 km de long et très large à certains endroits, c'est un accomplissement majeur.  Je tiens à dire «Chapeau!» mais avec le temps que nous vivons actuellement, je pense qu'il serait sage de simplement donner une sincère remerciement.

Lac Leamy in winter / Le Lac Leamy en hiver

I received a lovely large Moleskine watercolour sketchbook (8.25 x 11.5 inches) for Christmas and recently tested it with this simple sketch of Lac Leamy in Gatineau, Quebec.  The Moleskine reacted very well to a heavy wash as well as to the watercolour paints.  In this image, we find the same tree that I sketched in the autumn, but the landscape has certainly changed!  In the background, you can see the Hilton Hotel and some of the downtown buildings.  The size of this urban park is just amazing.  Let's hope that it continues to stay out of the hands of developers.

J'ai reçu une belle grande carnet de croquis pour aquarelle de Moleskine (8,25 x 11,5 pouces) pour Noël et récemment je l'ai testé avec cette simple esquisse du Lac Leamy à Gatineau, Québec. Le Moleskine a très bien réagi à un lavage intensif ainsi que pour les peintures à l'aquarelle. Dans cette image, on retrouve le même arbre que j'ai dessiné à l'automne, mais le paysage a bien changé! En arrière-plan, vous pouvez voir l'Hôtel Hilton et une partie des bâtiments du centre-ville. La taille de ce parc urbain est tout simplement incroyable. Espérons qu'il continue à rester en dehors des mains des développeurs.

Junior bowling / Les quilles pour les jeunes

Here's another sketch I did last weekend at the bowling alley.  I began drawing this sketch standing up with my sketchbook in my hands but soon found this technique to be all but impossible.  So, I took a few photos of the scene and completed the image later.

I found it funny the way that the children were taught to roll their bowling ball:  they took the ball in both hands and swung between their legs.  I guess that it would be far too hard for them to throw with one hand.

Voici un autre dessin que j'ai fait la semaine dernière au centre de quilles. J'ai commencé à dessiner ce croquis debout avec mon carnet de croquis dans mes mains, mais j'ai découvert assez vite que cette technique soit tout simplement impossible. Alors, j'ai pris quelques photos de la scène et j'ai complété l'image plus tard.
Je l'ai trouvé drôle la façon dont les enfants ont appris à rouler leur boule de quilles: ils ont pris le ballon à deux mains et l'a balancé entre leurs jambes. Je suppose que ce serait trop difficile pour eux de le jeter avec une seule main.

Junior bowling / Les quilles pour les jeunes

This weekend, my wife and I brought one of our grandsons to his junior bowling game.  Alex has been interested in bowling ever since he was in diapers!  For a long time, he played bowling in the house with a plastic set he had, and also on the iPad.  A couple of years ago, he joined a junior league and has been enjoying it ever since.  Although we had been there before, we found the bolling alley to be an incredibly busy place filled with kids and adults. This is a scene I captured.

Cette fin de semaine, ma femme et moi ont apporté un de nos petits-fils à son jeu de quilles junior. Alex a été intéressé à jouer aux quilles depuis qu'il était dans couches! Pendant longtemps, il a joué aux quilles dans la maison avec un ensemble en plastique, et aussi sur iPad. Il y a environs deux ans, il a rejoint une ligue junior et s'est bien amusé. Même si nous avions été là avant, nous avons trouvé que le centre de quilles était un endroit incroyablement  remplie avec les enfants et les adultes. Voici un scène que j'ai dessiné.

Streetview in winter / La vue de la rue en hiver

This is a sketch of the street in front of my house.  I did it from behind a nice warm window!  As you can see winter has really arrived and the snow accumulation will only get bigger.  You may want to compare this sketch with another one that I posted on November 5, 2012.  Its roughly the same scene but at the end of autumn.  I tend to think that we have more than four seasons here in Ottawa-Gatineau - the differences that we get within a season are sometimes quite remarkable.

Ceci est un croquis de la rue en face de ma maison. Je l'ai fait derrière une fenêtre bien chaud! Comme vous pouvez voir, l'hiver est arrivé et sans doubt l'accumulation de neige augmentera encore. Vous voudrez peut-être comparer ce dessin avec un autre que j'ai posté le 5 novembre 2012.  C'est à peu près la même scène mais à la fin de l'automne. J'ai tendance à penser que nous avons plus de quatre saisons ici, à Ottawa-Gatineau - les différences que nous recevons dans une saison sont parfois tout à fait remarquable.

Gandalf

Like millions of other people, I went to see the movie The Hobbit during the holiday season. While I can understand that the storyline had to be 'enhanced' in order to create three separate episodes for this single novel, I feel that the movie put too much emphasis on violence versus the riddle-solving and cunningness that I seemed to recall from my last reading of the book.  Anyway, it was an entertaining 2.5 hours. This sketch of Gandalf is one that I did a couple of years ago when doing a few illustrations for The Hobbit (see my labels for other sketches).

Comme des millions d'autres personnes, je suis allé voir le film The Hobbit pendant la saison des vacances. Même si je peux comprendre que l'histoire devait être «renforcée» afin de créer trois épisodes distincts pour ce seul roman, je pense que le film met trop l'accent sur ​​la violence contre les énigmes et des résolutions de ruse que je semblais me souviens de mon dernière lecture du livre. Quoi qu'il en soit, le film était divertissant pour 2,5 heures. Cette esquisse de Gandalf est un que j'ai fait il y a quelques années lorsque j'ai fait quelques illustrations pour The Hobbit (voir mes étiquettes pour d'autres esquisses).

After two major snowstorms within a week, it seems as though we've finally returned to our 'normal' Canadian winter weather.  Snow, snow, and more snow.  However, it is lovely to witness a snowstorm in a forest.  Sounds are muted, colours are transformed into greyscale, and mysterious tracks disappear in the forest.

Après deux tempêtes de neige majeures dans une semaine, il me semble que nous avons finalement retournés à notre l'hiver canadien «normal». Neige, neige et encore de la neige. Cependant, il est très agréable de voir une tempête de neige dans une forêt. Les sons sont coupés, les couleurs sont transformées en niveaux de gris, et il y a des pistes mystérieuses qui disparaissent dans la forêt.

Cottage and hiden cabin / Chalet et cabane cachée

Here's another addition to my series on cottages on the lake.  As much as this cottage looks superb, the small cabin hidden on the right side of the painting looks like a little gem with its floor to ceiling windows overlooking the lake.

Voici une autre addition à ma série de peintures des chalets sur le lac. Autant que ce chalet est superb, la petite cabane cachée sur le côté droit de la peinture ressemble à un petit bijou avec ses grandes fenêtres donnant sur le lac.

Leamy Lake Park / Parc du Lac Leamy

A couple of weeks ago, I went on a walk at the Lake Leamy Park in Gatineau.  It was a cold, gray day and you had to be careful when walking since the previous day's rain had frozen on the ground.  The park has some interesting bike paths (which are converted into cross-country ski paths in winter) and a lot of large trees.  One of them caught my attention and I took a picture for a possible future sketch.  I don't know how many more years this tree will survive since it had a fairly large hole in its trunk.

A il y a quelques semaines, je suis allé en promenade dans le parc du Lac-Leamy à Gatineau. C'était une journée froide et grise, et il fallait être prudent en marchant puisque la pluie de la veille avait gelé sur le terrain. Le parc a des pistes cyclables intéressants (qui sont convertis en pistes de ski de fond en hiver) et beaucoup de grands arbres. L'un d'eux a attiré mon attention et j'ai pris une photo pour une esquisse ans l'avenir. Je ne sais pas combien d'années cet arbre survivra car il y avait un trou assez grand dans son tronc.

Crab apple tree / Pommier crabe

To continue my series of sketches from behind warm windows, here's a crab apple tree that grows in my backyard.  The colours reflect the rather grim weather that we've been having lately - overcast skies, cold temperatures and dim light.  However, everything should perk up when the snow finally arrives.  I'm always attracted to this tree because of its rough bark and the manner that its limbs intertwine. In the spring, it is a riot of colour and lovely fragrances.

Pour continuer ma série de croquis d'en arrière les fenêtres chaudes, voici un pommier crabe qui pousse dans mon jardin.  Les couleurs reflètent les conditions météorologiques plutôt sombre que nous avons eu ces derniers temps - ciel couvert, les températures froides et les niveaux d'éclairage bas.  Cependant, tout devrait s'améliorer quand la neige arrive.  Je suis toujours attiré par cet arbre en raison de son écorce rugueuse et de la manière qui s'entrelacent ses branches. En printemps, il est plein de couleurs et les odeurs parfumés.
