Old willow tree / Vieux saule

As I mentioned in a previous posting, there are many majestic trees in Prince Edward County (Ontario). This is an illustration that I made of one very large and tall willow tree next to the cottage that we rented. I couldn't take my eyes off it. Its bark was especially thick and sinuous and as I examined it, it seemed to take on shapes that looked like faces. The willow reminded me of the many fantasy trees that Arthur Rackham illustrated for fairy tale books like the Brothers Grimm. In this spirit, I began to draw the tree on site with a fountain pen in ink. When I started to add watercolour paint to the illustration at home, I was shocked to find out that the ink wasn't waterproof. The paint mixed with the ink creating a mess and destroying my illustration! Fortunately I had taken a photo of my initial  ink drawing and was able to transfer it to the Procreate app on my iPad Pro and 'paint' it digitally. It's not at all what I planned. Maybe someday I'll recreate the drawing with waterproof ink and finally paint it with watercolours.

Comme je l'ai mentionné dans un article précédent, le comté de Prince Edward (Ontario) posséde d'arbres majestueux. Voici une illustration que j'ai réalisée d'un très grand saule près du chalet que nous avions loué. Je ne pouvais détacher mon regard de lui. Son écorce était particulièrement épaisse et sinueuse, et en l'examinant, elle semblait prendre des formes de visages. Ce saule me rappelait les nombreux arbres fantastiques qu'Arthur Rackham illustrait pour des contes comme ceux des Frères Grimm. Dans cet esprit, j'ai commencé à dessiner l'arbre sur place, à l'encre, avec un stylo-plume. Lorsque j'ai voulu ajouter de l'aquarelle à mon dessin une fois rentrée chez moi, j'ai été choqué de constater que l'encre n'était pas imperméable. La peinture s'est mélangée à l'encre, créant un véritable désastre et ruinant mon illustration ! Heureusement, j'avais pris une photo de mon dessin à l'encre et j'ai pu la transférer dans l'application Procreate sur mon iPad Pro et la « peindre » numériquement. Ce n'est pas du tout ce que j'avais prévu. Peut-être qu'un jour je recréerai ce dessin à l'encre indélébile et que je le peindrai enfin à l'aquarelle.

House on East Lake marshes / Maison sur les marais du lac Est

 

A small house tucked away in the corner of East Lake in Prince Edward County (Ontario) caught my attention. The trees and marshes seemed to envelop it as it stood by itself far from the other neighbours on the shoreline. I thought that it was a nice scene to sketch in ink.

Une petite maison nichée dans un coin du lac East, dans le comté de Prince Edward (Ontario), a attiré mon attention. Les arbres et les marais semblaient l'envelopper, isolée loin des autres maisons du rivage. J'ai pensé que ce serait un beau sujet de croquis à l'encre.

East Lake tree on shoreline / Un arbre au rivage du lac East

 

While staying at East Lake in Prince Edward County, Ontario, we had a beautiful panoramic view of the marshy shoreline next to the cottage that we rented. The lake is fairly large - roughly 7 by 5 km - and is separated from Lake Ontario by a large sandbar. Our view of East Lake was ever-changing due to the sunlight on the water or early morning mists. We especially enjoyed watching two families of swans that lived in the marshes nearby. This ink sketch, which I completed on site, includes a large tree that grew on the shoreline with branches that reached out far; unfortunately I couldn't identify it. The County has plenty of majestic trees worth sketching in all sorts of locations - in meadows, in small villages and, of course, on many shorelines. This makes it tempting to return!

Lors de notre séjour à East Lake, dans le comté de Prince Edward, en Ontario, nous avons profité d'une vue panoramique magnifique sur les rives marécageuses, juste à côté du chalet que nous avions loué. Le lac est assez grand (environ 7 km sur 5 km) et est séparé du lac Ontario par un large banc de sable. La vue sur East Lake changeait constamment au gré du soleil sur l'eau et des brumes matinales. Nous avons particulièrement apprécié observer deux familles de cygnes qui vivaient dans les marais voisins. Ce croquis à l'encre, réalisé sur place, inclu un grand arbre qui poussait sur la rive, avec des branches s'étendant au loin ; malheureusement, je n'ai pas pu l'identifier. Le comté contien beaucoup d'arbres majestueux qui méritent d'être croqués, dans toutes sortes d'endroits : dans les prairies, dans les petits villages et, bien sûr, sur de nombreuses rives. Cela me donne envie d'y retourner !

Outlet Beach / La plage Outlet

Recently, I made a few visits to the Outlet Beach in Sandbanks Provincial Park, which is located in Prince Edward County, Ontario. My wife and I rented a cottage about a 15 minute walk away from the shoreline which was a nice relaxing promenade for us. This beach is stunning. It's like being in the Caribbean (without the palm trees)! The sand is fine and the fresh water from Lake Ontario was warm; the shoreline is shallow and extends at least 30 meters into the lake before it rises above your shoulders. On windy days, there are white caps and impressive waves washing onto the shoreline. I began these two sketches on the beach and finished them in the cottage.

J'ai récemment fait plusieurs visites à la plage Outlet, dans le parc provincial de Sandbanks, situé dans le comté de Prince Edward, en Ontario. Ma femme et moi avions loué un chalet à une quinzaine de minutes de marche du rivage, ce qui nous a permis de profiter de promenades relaxantes. Cette plage est magnifique. On se croirait aux Caraïbes (sans les palmiers, bien sûr !). Le sable est fin et l'eau douce du lac Ontario était chaude. Le rivage est peu profond et s'avance sur au moins 30 mètres dans le lac avant d'arriver au-dessus des épaules. Les jours de vent, des crêtes d'écume et d'impressionnantes vagues viennent déferler sur le rivage. J'ai commencé ces deux croquis sur la plage et je les ai terminés au chalet.

Balloon and Rudbeckia flowers / Les campanules et les rudbeckias

 

Sometimes I just need to draw. I may not have any inspiration or any idea to be fleshed-out; my fingers are simply itching to get a hold of a pencil or pen to sketch something. When I'm drawing in this mindset, time passes quietly and I only have to think of the effects of light, or of different shapes, or of contrasts in colours, or of how the ink flows. Nothing else. The results don't have to be fine. It's about doing something rather than making something. Anyhow, this is what I've been doing lately: playing with my fountain pen and some watercolours in the garden. On the left are balloon flowers and on the right are rudbeckia. Regardless of the results, it was time well-spent.

Parfois, j'ai juste besoin de dessiner. Je n'ai peut-être aucune inspiration, aucune idée précise à développer ; mes doigts me démangent simplement de saisir un crayon ou un stylo pour esquisser quelque chose. Quand je dessin dans cet état d'esprit, le temps passe paisiblement et je n'ai qu'à penser aux effets de la lumière, aux différentes formes, aux contrastes de couleurs, ou à la fluidité de l'encre. Rien d'autre. Le résultat n'a pas besoin d'être parfait. L'important, c'est de faire quelque chose, pas de créer. Bref, voici comment j'emplois mon temps ces derniers jours : jouer avec mon stylo-plume et quelques aquarelles dans le jardin. À gauche, des campanules et à droite, des rudbeckias. Quel que soit le résultat, c'était du temps bien passé.

Oriental lily / Lys oriental

Oriental lilies are well in bloom at this time of year. What I find most amazing about them are the wide variety of bold colours and fragrant blossoms. While I don't have any growing at home, I took a reference photo of this one that I found in my daughter's garden to create this image.

Les lys orientaux sont en pleine floraison en ce moment. Ce qui me fascine le plus, c'est la grande variété de leurs couleurs éclatantes et de leurs fleurs parfumées. Je n'en cultive pas chez moi, alors j'ai pris une photo d'une lys dans le jardin de ma fille comme reférence pour céer cette image.
