A stag in the snow / Un cerf dans la neige

Last week I took a detour during my walk in the Lac Leamy Park. I followed a small trail which went inside the forest and twisted through trees and small brush. At one point I stopped to take my bearings and to my astonishment a small stag was standing nearby. It seemed to have materialized from nowhere. After a couple of moments of conversation I slowly continued on my path and to my surprise the deer followed me. (I thought I may have stumbled on its regular walking path.) Then, just as quickly as it appeared, I looked around and it was gone. I thought to myself that this could make a good subject for a sketch. Then as I was reading Erin Morgenstern's The Starless Sea, I came across this passage which seemed to perfectly summarize the encounter:
There is a stag in the snow. Blink and he will vanish. Was he a stag at all or was he something else? Was he a sentiment hanging unspoken or a path not taken or a closed door left unopened? Or was he a deer, glimpsed amongst the trees and then gone, disturbing not a single branch in his departure?

Deer in early winter / Cerf en début d'hiver

Lately the weather has almost returned to normal in Ottawa-Gatineau. It's such a relief after the terrible cold we've had, and so I've taken the opportunity to take long walks along the bike paths leading into the Leamy Lake Park. I follow a portion of the same route that I take in warmer weather with my bike. The park is very quiet at this time of the year. And it looks very different without leaves on the trees and a thin layer of snow on the ground. I've encountered few people during my visits but did meet a solitary deer one morning. It was fairly close to me but didn't seem at all alarmed as it foraged for something to eat. From a snapshot I took, I created this quick sketch on my iPad.

Beaver / Castor

At the recent Ottawa Urban Sketchers' event, I joined other artists who were sketching many of the showcases at the Museum of Nature that display birds and animals. I immediately choose one showing beavers at work. I have a close interest in them, since a number of beavers at my lake have been devouring a large number of trees along my shoreline. Despite the destruction, I'm impressed by these rodents which have a well-developed knowledge of hydraulics to build strong dams and to cut down large trees.

Apple tree in backyard / Pommier dans mon court

The weather has been fairly cold lately and the skies have been overcast. It's not the ideal time to go out and sketch or photograph the landscape. So, one afternoon I took my iPad Pro and began to sketch our apple tree in the backyard from my window. The tree is an interesting subject with its limbs stretching out in different directions. To my surprise as I was drawing, a young rabbit came into the yard and ate some of the bird seeds that had fallen on the ground. It hunted around for a while and wasn't the least bit frightened - a good model for a sketch!

At this time of year in the Upper Gatineau Valley, there are few people in the cottages and houses that are found along the lakes and in the forested areas. It's very tranquil. Yes, there's the occasional ski-do that may pass by on the lake but otherwise it is a silent world. While taking a walk before supper one evening, my daughter and I disturbed a small group of deer that were foraging for food. I quickly took a photo thinking it might be a good subject for a sketch.

Deer in the forest / Un cerf dans la forêt

A couple of days ago, I visited the cottage on a fairly mild day with a gray cloud cover. It wasn't inspiring weather but nothing really to complain about. My wife and I took a walk in the woods and, on our return, a group of deer seemed to be patiently waiting for us near our cottage. We stood still watching them ... and they did the same. A kind of magic.

Bird feeder? / Mangeoir d'oiseau?

My backyard bird feeder attracts cardinals, chickadees, sparrows, juncos, nut hatches, woodpeckers, blue jays and ... four squirrels - one brown and three black. I don't want to begrudge them a livelihood but the feeder wasn't meant for them! Nothing I can do, I guess.

Deer in springtime / Les cerfs en printemps

The snow has melted and the deer now have more grass to feed on. They seem content and less fearful.

On a recent visit to the Eastern Townships, I had a chance to walk by a lovely lake in Orford, Québec. That morning the sky was overcast and there was a slight chill in the air. I found it interesting that the reflections in the water were more pronounced than the cloudy sky. This was inspiration enough to compose this painting. Watercolour, 15.5 x 12 inches (39 x 30 cm).
