Thumbnails #1 - 6 / Vignettes #1 - 6

Every now and then I have the urge to do something different. It might be to create comics of wizards (https://michaelsimaginarium.blogspot.com/) or to print linographs or just to experiment with different watercolour techniques. Lately I've been interested in creating small thumbnail ink drawings hopefully each day, kinda like Inktober but not just for one month. My plan is to make small 8 x 8 cm thumbnails and only spend roughly 30 - 40 minutes on each one. It will help me 'scratch the itch' I have to draw or paint on occasions when I don't want to embark on a time-consuming project. I've been inspired by thumbnails that some artists create: Harry Frost (https://www.harryfrostartist.com/fountainpen), Laurie King (https://www.instagram.com/startwithasquiggle), and Aron Wiesenfeld (https://www.boredpanda.com/tiny-drawings-on-post-it-notes-aron-wiesenfeld/) and (https://aronwiesenfeldshop.com/products/playtime-book). I don't know how long this project will last, but it should be fun.

These thumbnails are: 1 - Shoreline reflections; 2 - Kozy Nook; 3 - Front door; 4 - Backyard garden; 5 - Carport pergola; 6 - Backyard gazebo. Micron pens in a Royal Talens sketchbook, 8 x 8 cm each.

Old willow tree / Vieux saule

As I mentioned in a previous posting, there are many majestic trees in Prince Edward County (Ontario). This is an illustration that I made of one very large and tall willow tree next to the cottage that we rented. I couldn't take my eyes off it. Its bark was especially thick and sinuous and as I examined it, it seemed to take on shapes that looked like faces. The willow reminded me of the many fantasy trees that Arthur Rackham illustrated for fairy tale books like the Brothers Grimm. In this spirit, I began to draw the tree on site with a fountain pen in ink. When I started to add watercolour paint to the illustration at home, I was shocked to find out that the ink wasn't waterproof. The paint mixed with the ink creating a mess and destroying my illustration! Fortunately I had taken a photo of my initial  ink drawing and was able to transfer it to the Procreate app on my iPad Pro and 'paint' it digitally. It's not at all what I planned. Maybe someday I'll recreate the drawing with waterproof ink and finally paint it with watercolours.

A small house tucked away in the corner of East Lake in Prince Edward County (Ontario) caught my attention. The trees and marshes seemed to envelop it as it stood by itself far from the other neighbours on the shoreline. I thought that it was a nice scene to sketch in ink.

Ink drawing with Micron pens in a Fabriano sketchbook, 20 x 11.5 cm (8 x 4.5 inches).

While staying at East Lake in Prince Edward County, Ontario, we had a beautiful panoramic view of the marshy shoreline next to the cottage that we rented. The lake is fairly large - roughly 7 by 5 km - and is separated from Lake Ontario by a large sandbar. Our view of East Lake was ever-changing due to the sunlight on the water or early morning mists. We especially enjoyed watching two families of swans that lived in the marshes nearby. This ink sketch, which I completed on site, includes a large tree that grew on the shoreline with branches that reached out far; unfortunately I couldn't identify it. The County has plenty of majestic trees worth sketching in all sorts of locations - in meadows, in small villages and, of course, on many shorelines. This makes it tempting to return!

Ink drawing with Micron pens in a Fabriano sketchbook, 22 x 14 cm (8.5 x 5.5 inches).

Cela me donne envie d'y retourner !

Outlet Beach / La plage Outlet

Recently, I made a few visits to the Outlet Beach in Sandbanks Provincial Park, which is located in Prince Edward County, Ontario. My wife and I rented a cottage about a 15 minute walk away from the shoreline which was a nice relaxing promenade for us. This beach is stunning. It's like being in the Caribbean (without the palm trees)! The sand is fine and the fresh water from Lake Ontario was warm; the shoreline is shallow and extends at least 30 meters into the lake before it rises above your shoulders. On windy days, there are white caps and impressive waves washing onto the shoreline. I began these two sketches on the beach and finished them in the cottage.

Ink drawings with Micron pens in a Fabriano sketchbook. Top sketch 21 x 12 cm (8.5 x 4.75 inches), Bottom sketch 22 x 11cm (8.5 x 4.25 inches).

Davis Lock, Rideau Canal / L'écluse Davis, canal Rideau

The Rideau Canal waterway has 47 lock stations that allow boats to travel between lakes and rivers with different water levels. These locks were completed by 1832 and operate today by Parks Canada in the same fashion as they did when they were initially built. The locks don't rely on electrical or fuel engines to function. They operate solely on man-power and gravity. This highlights the ingenuity and skill of that era. Davis Lock is situated between Sand Lake and Opinicon Lake, Ontario. The difference in water level between the two lakes seemed to be around 3 m (10 feet) and the locksmiths could pass a boat within 15 minutes. It was very impressive. I made this ink drawing from reference photos that I took at the lock.

Sand Lake, Ontario # 3 / Le lac Sand, Ontario # 3

Sitting on a dock at Sand Lake (Ontario), I made this quick sketch of the shoreline. From what I saw of the landscape around the lake, there was a lovely variety of vistas - bays with lily pads, rocky shorelines and some cottages almost on the water! If I had a boat, I could have gone on sketching the panorama of the lake for a long long time. But its summer and a time to relax. I was very content simply to sketch the sites around me.

Ink drawing with a Micron pen and a Pentel brush pen in a Fabriano sketchbook, 21 x13 cm (8.25 x 5 inches).

Sand Lake, Ontario #2 / Le lac Sand, Ontario # 2

This is a sketch of a cottage that we rented at Sand Lake (Ontario) as viewed from below on the shoreline. The cottage was on a slope that fell roughly 20 meters, so we had to think carefully before we descended the stairs in case we forgot something and had to return. One thing that we liked about the cottage was the manner that it was constructed in harmony with the mature trees all around it - oak, maple, pine, basswood and ironwood trees. Being deep in a forest also had the advantage of hearing all sorts of birdsongs that we weren't accustomed to.

Ink drawing with a Micron pen and a Pentel brush pen in a Fabriano sketchbook, 19.5 x 12.5cm (7.75 x 5 inches).

Sand Lake, Ontario # 1 / Le lac Sand, Ontario # 1

Sand Lake is part of a chain of lakes that form the Rideau Canal waterway in Eastern Ontario. (Of course, the 200 km waterway is also formed by the Cataraqui River, the Rideau River and the Rideau Canal.) Sand Lake is a beautiful lake with locks at either end - Davis Lock and Jones Falls Locks - making the water level extremely stable and accessible to pleasure boats from far and near. We rented one of the many cottages which are found along the shoreline and were able to do some swimming, kayaking and just-plain-lounging-in-the-shade. My sketch is of a small rocky point near our cottage. The sketch should also have included a family of loons that we frequently saw (and heard) during our stay. The haunting song of the loons made for a perfect setting.

Ink drawing with Micron and Pentel brush pens in a Fabriano sketchbook, 21 x 13 cm (8.25 x 5 inches).

Lac Leamy Park - The path goes on and on / Le parc du lac Leamy - Le sentier continue

One month ago today, I made a sketch at this same spot. At that time, Lac Leamy Park was flooded and the bike path ended roughly where the sign was. Today, the park is alive and the bike path goes on without obstructions. Big change. It's amazing how quickly things alter at this time of year. Within the same month, the daffodils and tulips came and went; the cherry and apple blossoms flourished and fell; and the bare branches of the trees transformed into verdant canopies. It's magical. Hopefully the changes will slow down so that we can better appreciate this wonderful time of the year.

Ink drawing using a Faber-Castell fountain pen with Manuscript ink in a Fabriano sketchbook, 13 x 17.5 cm (5 x 7 inches).

Lac Leamy: End of the Road / Le lac Leamy : Fin du chemin

I took my first bike ride of the season today and headed towards my favourite spot: Lac Leamy Park. Sadly, the park was subjected to flooding which has once again hit the entire Ottawa River Basin. This is the fourth time in recent years (2017, 2019 and 2023) that the floodwaters have risen so high. While the water levels are beginning to recede, the flooding has already lasted for over a week. Taking in the scene, I began this sketch on my bike. Hopefully in a couple of weeks everything will return to normal.

Clockwork / Le mouvement d'horloge

Looking out my window, I notice things that take place at regular moments throughout the day almost like clockwork. I'm not alluding to sunrises and sunsets, although these are obvious measures of the day. What I'm referring to are things like the neighbourhood kids walking to school in the early morning, a retired senior cycling after breakfast, the postman delivering the mail around noon and people dutifully walking their dogs at particular moments. Clockwork events. They give a kind of rythm to the day. For example, while I'm reading the news on my iPad at 9:00 am, I've regularly noticed two guys walking their pooch in front of my house. This has gone on repeatedly through summers and winters, maybe pausing briefly when the weather turned particularly bad. Strange as it may seem, this unique clockwork activity inspired me to make this drawing.

Ink drawing with a Lamy Safari pen, Platinum carbon black ink in a Moleskine watercolour sketchbook,  23 x 17 cm (9 x 6.75 inches).

Sprigs of Spring / Brins de printemps

I made these illustrations from a bouquet of flowers that we bought for Easter. I planned to keep it simple so I only concentrated on two sprigs of flowers for my sketch - one of dahlias and another of alstroemeras. I used a fountain pen to draw the flowers and to fill in the dark spaces. I thought that I was done once I had my pen and ink sketch. After a while, I started to wonder how these sketches would look in colour but at the same time I didn't want to loose my simple black-and-white sketches. So, I used a technique I've tried before: I scanned the drawings and painted them on my iPad using Procreate. Not too complicated. Interesting results.

Recently, my wife and I had the pleasure of visiting Britain. The weather was lovely and flowers were in bloom which was in stark contrast to the wicked winter that we've had this year in Ottawa-Gatineau. We took in a number of the normal tourist sites, but enjoyed just slowly walking in the different neighbourhoods of London. It was very different from the urban environment that we see back home. I made this sketch of a small street in Westminster that we walked along one evening. The rooflines impressed us with the steep roofs and tall chimneys. We could well imagine a Peter Pan or Mary Poppins in this neighbourhood.

It's extremely rare that I'll spend time in a bar, but recently when I found out that singer-songwriter Ian Tamblyn was performing at the Black Sheep in Wakefield (Québec) I made an exception. Ian Tamblyn has recorded over 30 albums in his career beginning in 1976. While I certainly haven't heard all of them, I'm impressed by the quiet songs in one of his albums, Walking in the Footsteps - Celebrating the Group of Seven. At the Black Sheep, he played his songs in a folk-rock fashion to a small but dedicated and enthusiatic crowd. I discretely took a couple of photos at the concert and created this ink drawing afterwards. I liked the ambiance of the Black Sheep. It reminded me a little of Le Hibou (not the restaurant next door but the legendary coffee house on Sussex Street in Ottawa that had concerts by the like of Joni Mitchell, Bruce Cockburn, Kris Kristofferson, Neil Young, Muddy Waters and more).  I liked the intimate ambiance in the room. It's a big difference from listening to singers in large concert halls even if you can manage to get a seat up front.

A.Y. Jackson's 'Winter Night' / « La Nuit d'Hiver » d'A.Y. Jackson

This is a  reproduction of A.Y. Jackson's Winter Night that I made as free-hand ink drawing. Jackson (1882-1974) was a Canadian landscape painter and original member of the Group of Seven. In 1925, along with other members of the Group, he created four small lithographs for an exhibition. The lithograph which I copied, called Winter Night,  was 13 x 16.5 cm (5.5 x 6.75 inches) in size and limited to 100 printings. It doesn't depict a specific location like many of Jackson's oil paintings but reflects his interest in winter landscapes. Apparently he made an oil painting inspired by this lithograph, but I haven't been able to locate it. Point-au-Persil (below) is as close a scene as I can find. While Jackson is mostly remembered for his oil paintings, he began his art training in Montreal lithograph companies. He's known to have made about 40 lithographs over his lifetime. I liked this lithograph because it captures the landscape that we now find in Ottawa-Gatineau. The darkness of the sky and trees are clearly delineated. It's a beautiful small piece that allowed me to learn something about Jackson's style while I made this reproduction. (Incidentally, my new sketchbook was able to take the large amounts of ink that I used without showing up on the reverse side. And the lines didn't bleed on the paper.)

This is another quick sketch from one of my walks in my neighbourhood recently. Being a relatively warm day, there were some puddles in the street and I could see the reflection of trees in them. I thought that this would make a nice subject for a sketch so I photographed it and later drew it in a new sketchbook.  Since I used Micron pens for this sketch, the paper didn't bleed ink as it might with a fountain pen. I'll certainly have to experiment some more.

Sculptures of clerks / Les sculptures de greffiers

The Parliament Buildings in Ottawa are decorated with hundreds if not thousands of stone and wooden carvings.  Some depict mythical animals or grotesques, others commemorate special events or people, and many more illustrate flora and fauna. One small series of stone wall carvings was brought to my attention by a friend a while ago. This particular series is found in the Centre Block (which is currently closed and under extensive renovations until well into the next decade) and they portray parliamentary clerks with very strange expressions on their faces. I took the liberty of interpreting these expressions of  clerks as LISTENING to what is being said during debates in the Chamber, as attempting to UNDERSTAND the procedural actions taking place, as RECORDING the decisions of the Chamber in its journals, and as REMEMBERING past decisions and traditions for the continuity of the institution. I sincerely hope that I haven't misinterpreted the work of these sculptors. Having been a parliamentary clerk, I can well appreciate the expressions that the sculptors have chosen as well as some of the stories that might accompany them. I hope that my rather comical illustrations have given enough credit to the important work recounted by this small series of stone carvings.

I like to take walks in my suburban neighbourhood. Although my route is sometimes repetitive, the scenery changes with the seasons and the weather to make it interesting. This scene is from a series of photos that I took on a recent walk when I was searching to find scenes to sketch. At first I thought of making a watercolour painting from my reference photo but then reconsidered and made this ink drawing. I've been rather fond of ink drawings lately, although I confess that I find myself going through phases of either making a bunch of oil paintings or watercolours or digital images or ink sketches. I don't know what compels me to create in this fashion because most artists - amateur or professional - tend to stick to one medium. Anyway, my sketch attempts to illustrate a crisp winter morning on a street near my home. While the scene may not be breath-taking, the temperature was!

J'aime me promener dans mon quartier résidentiel.

In older neighbourhoods of Gatineau, you can see some residences known as matchstick houses (maisons de bois allumette). These are wooden houses built around 1900 to roughly the 1920s mostly by people who worked at the lumber and match-making industries nearby. (The term 'Alumette' comes from French word for matchsticks.) Typically these houses had steeply pitched roofs and narrow simple facades. Over the years, these houses have disappeared due to urban renewal, fires and economic decline. There's some movement afoot to preserve the remaining neighbourhoods of matchstick houses. This ink drawing was made from a photo that I took at my daughter's house which is in one of those neighbourhoods. The snowfall that I illustrated gives the scene an atmosphere that's unique for this time of year.
