Echinacea (Coneflower) / Échinacée

Echinacea - or coneflower - is a popular perennial plant that blossoms in Ottawa-Gatineau from mid-July to early September. Most people are accustomed with the variety that has purple flowers but there are many others with bold colours and slightly different blossoms. Right now, we're at the height of the floral season and it's a great pleasure to work in the garden (pulling weeds) and, when time permits, to sketch some colourful plants. The coneflower that I sketched had a mixture of purple and red-orange blossoms. I decided to illustrate it with a background of lavender - using a new tube of paint that I just bought!

L'échinacée, ou rudbeckie, est une plante vivace populaire qui fleurit dans la région d'Ottawa-Gatineau de la mi-juillet au début septembre. La plupart des gens connaissent la variété à fleurs violettes, mais il en existe bien d'autres aux couleurs vives et aux fleurs légèrement différentes. En ce moment, nous sommes en pleine floraison et c'est un vrai plaisir de jardiner (désherber) et, quand j'ai le temps, de dessiner quelques plantes colorées. L'échinacée que j'ai dessinée avait des fleurs mêlant violet et rouge-orangé. J'ai décidé de l'illustrer sur un fond lavande - avec un nouveau tube de peinture que je viens d'acheter !

Sand Lake, Ontario # 5 / Le lac Sand, Ontario # 5

The cottage next to the one that we rented at Sand Lake, Ontario had a small but useful boat house on the shoreline. I imagine that it was great for storing paddles, safety jackets, fishing rods and all sorts of things essential for enjoying water sports on a lake. At first view, I knew that the scene would make a great subject for a painting. The boat house was unique, the trees were magnificent and the reflections on the water were transfixing. The scene depicted a classical cottage lifestyle.

Le chalet voisin de celui que nous avions loué au lac Sand, en Ontario, possédait un petit hangar à bateaux bien pratique, situé au bord de l'eau. J'imagine qu'il était idéal pour ranger les pagaies, gilets de sauvetage, cannes à pêche et tout le matériel indispensable aux sports nautiques. Dès le premier regard, j'ai su que le scène ferait un excellent sujet de peinture. Le hangar à bateaux était unique, les arbres magnifiques et les reflets sur l'eau envoûtants. La scène évoquait la vie paisible d'un chalet traditionnel.

Davis Lock, Rideau Canal / L'écluse Davis, canal Rideau

 

The Rideau Canal waterway has 47 lock stations that allow boats to travel between lakes and rivers with different water levels. These locks were completed by 1832 and operate today by Parks Canada in the same fashion as they did when they were initially built. The locks don't rely on electrical or fuel engines to function. They operate solely on man-power and gravity. This highlights the ingenuity and skill of that era. Davis Lock is situated between Sand Lake and Opinicon Lake, Ontario. The difference in water level between the two lakes seemed to be around 3 m (10 feet) and the locksmiths could pass a boat within 15 minutes. It was very impressive. I made this ink drawing from reference photos that I took at the lock.

La voie navigable du canal Rideau compte 47 écluses permettant aux bateaux de naviguer entre des lacs et des rivières aux niveaux d'eau différents. Ces écluses, achevées en 1832, sont aujourd'hui exploitées par Parcs Canada de la même manière qu'à leur construction. Elles fonctionnent sans moteur électrique ni à combustion, uniquement grâce à la force humaine et à la gravité. Ceci témoigne de l'ingéniosité et du savoir-faire de l'époque. L'écluse Davis est située entre le lac Sand et le lac Opinicon, en Ontario. La différence de niveau d'eau entre les deux lacs semblait être d'environ 3 mètres, et les éclusiers pouvaient faire passer un bateau en moins de 15 minutes. C'était impressionnant. J'ai réalisé ce dessin à l'encre d'après des photos prises à l'écluse.

Sand Lake, Ontario # 4 / Le lac Sand, Ontario # 4

 

Can there be anything more relaxing than laying in a hammock next to a lake with a light summer breeze blowing? This seemed like the perfect scene of life on the Rideau Lakes in the middle of summer that was just asking to be painted. I admit that the only things missing from my painting are a fishing boat and a loon in the background. I sketched this scene at Sand Lake, Ontario, and later added watercolour and a touch of gouache paint.

Y a-t-il quelque chose de plus relaxant que de se prélasser dans un hamac au bord d'un lac, bercé par une douce brise d'été ? Cela semblait être une scène parfait de la vie sur les lacs Rideau en plein été - une scène qui ne demandait qu'à être peinte. J'avoue que ma peinture ne manquait qu'un bateau de pêche et un huard à l'arrière-plan. J'ai réalisé cette esquisse au lac Sand, en Ontario, puis plus tard j'y ai ajouté de l'aquarelle et une touche de gouache.

Sand Lake, Ontario # 3 / Le lac Sand, Ontario # 3

 

Sitting on a dock at Sand Lake (Ontario), I made this quick sketch of the shoreline. From what I saw of the landscape around the lake, there was a lovely variety of vistas - bays with lily pads, rocky shorelines and some cottages almost on the water! If I had a boat, I could have gone on sketching the panorama of the lake for a long long time. But its summer and a time to relax. I was very content simply to sketch the sites around me.

Assise sur un quai du lac Sand (Ontario), j'ai réalisé ce croquis rapide du rivage. Le paysage qui entoure le lac offre une belle variété de panoramas : des baies couvertes de nénuphars, des rivages rocheux et quelques chalets presque au bord de l'eau ! Si j'avais eu un bateau, j'aurais pu croquer le panorama du lac pendant des heures. Mais c'est l'été, un temps de détente. J'étais parfaitement heureuse de simplement esquisser les paysages qui m'entouraient.

Sand Lake, Ontario #2 / Le lac Sand, Ontario # 2

This is a sketch of a cottage that we rented at Sand Lake (Ontario) as viewed from below on the shoreline. The cottage was on a slope that fell roughly 20 meters, so we had to think carefully before we descended the stairs in case we forgot something and had to return. One thing that we liked about the cottage was the manner that it was constructed in harmony with the mature trees all around it - oak, maple, pine, basswood and ironwood trees. Being deep in a forest also had the advantage of hearing all sorts of birdsongs that we weren't accustomed to.

Voici un croquis d'un chalet que nous avons loué au lac Sand (Ontario), vu d'en bas, de la rive. Le chalet était situé sur une pente d'environ 20 mètres, ce qui nous obligeait à bien réfléchir avant de descendre l'escalier, de peur d'oublier quelque chose et de devoir remonter. Ce qui nous a particulièrement plu, c'est la façon dont le chalet s'intégrait harmonieusement à la végétation environnante : chênes, érables, pins, tilleuls et charmes de Virginie. Être en pleine forêt nous offrait aussi l'avantage d'entendre toutes sortes de chants d'oiseaux auxquels nous n'étions pas habitués.

Sand Lake, Ontario # 1 / Le lac Sand, Ontario # 1

 

Sand Lake is part of a chain of lakes that form the Rideau Canal waterway in Eastern Ontario. (Of course, the 200 km waterway is also formed by the Cataraqui River, the Rideau River and the Rideau Canal.) Sand Lake is a beautiful lake with locks at either end - Davis Lock and Jones Falls Locks - making the water level extremely stable and accessible to pleasure boats from far and near. We rented one of the many cottages which are found along the shoreline and were able to do some swimming, kayaking and just-plain-lounging-in-the-shade. My sketch is of a small rocky point near our cottage. The sketch should also have included a family of loons that we frequently saw (and heard) during our stay. The haunting song of the loons made for a perfect setting.

Le lac Sand fait partie d'un ensemble de lacs formant la voie navigable du canal Rideau, dans l'est de l'Ontario. (Bien sûr, cette voie navigable de 200 km est également formée par la rivière Cataraqui, la rivière Rideau et le canal Rideau.) Le lac Sand est un magnifique lac doté d'écluses à chaque extrémité – les écluses Davis et Jones Falls – ce qui assure une grande stabilité du niveau de l'eau et permet l'accès aux bateaux de plaisance venant de loin et de près. Nous avons loué l'un des nombreux chalets qui bordent ses rives et avons pu nous baigner, faire du kayak et tout simplement nous prélasser à l'ombre. Mon croquis représente une petite pointe rocheuse près de notre chalet. J'aurais dû y inclure également une famille de huards que nous avons souvent aperçus (et entendus) durant notre séjour. Le chant mélancolique des huards créait une ambiance parfaite.
