Plaisance waterfalls / Les chutes de Plaisance

A couple of weeks ago, I got the chance to visit the waterfalls at Plaisance (Québec) and didn't regret it. The view from the well-maintained pathway is excellent and the sound of water cascading down the hillside is wonderful. The atmosphere of this forested landscape is very relaxing. I took a few reference photos and created this watercolour painting in a new sketchbook that has smooth cotton pages.

While my wife and I were on holidays in Prince Edward County (Ontario) this summer, we often passed by this location in West Lake. From a certain perspective, it looked like the church was in the middle of a large corn field. Of course, this wasn't the case but I thought that it made a nice scene. In addition, the steeple which resembled an elongated pyramid was nicely highlighted against the dark forest.

I openly admit that I'm not an early-riser. However, recently on vacation, I accidentally rose early one fine morning and looked out over the lake from our cottage rental. The sky was bright and the shoreline across from us was in deep shadows. After a moment, I noticed a small fishing boat quietly floating in the shadows with a couple of people patiently trolling for the catch-of-the-day. It was a lovely scene that I've attempted to capture in a quick watercolour study.

As I mentioned in a previous posting, at the cottage that we rented on East Lake in Prince Edward County (Ontario), there were two families of swans. We enjoyed watching them from the deck next to the shoreline. The two families stayed away from each other and were very protective. At one time, I saw a swan chasing a Canada goose away from its space. They are interesting birds to watch. We did notice one or two black swans as well but didn't know if this was a different species or the colour of the young. East Lake is a wonderful place to just sit and observe. The weather and time of day were constantly changing the view. Parr Island, which was in front of our cottage rental, almost looked like one of the clouds in the sky ready to fly away.

Watercolour with ink in a Fabriano watercolour sketchbook, 27 x 19 cm (10.75 x 7.5 inches).

A small house tucked away in the corner of East Lake in Prince Edward County (Ontario) caught my attention. The trees and marshes seemed to envelop it as it stood by itself far from the other neighbours on the shoreline. I thought that it was a nice scene to sketch in ink.

Ink drawing with Micron pens in a Fabriano sketchbook, 20 x 11.5 cm (8 x 4.5 inches).

While staying at East Lake in Prince Edward County, Ontario, we had a beautiful panoramic view of the marshy shoreline next to the cottage that we rented. The lake is fairly large - roughly 7 by 5 km - and is separated from Lake Ontario by a large sandbar. Our view of East Lake was ever-changing due to the sunlight on the water or early morning mists. We especially enjoyed watching two families of swans that lived in the marshes nearby. This ink sketch, which I completed on site, includes a large tree that grew on the shoreline with branches that reached out far; unfortunately I couldn't identify it. The County has plenty of majestic trees worth sketching in all sorts of locations - in meadows, in small villages and, of course, on many shorelines. This makes it tempting to return!

Ink drawing with Micron pens in a Fabriano sketchbook, 22 x 14 cm (8.5 x 5.5 inches).

Cela me donne envie d'y retourner !

Outlet Beach / La plage Outlet

Recently, I made a few visits to the Outlet Beach in Sandbanks Provincial Park, which is located in Prince Edward County, Ontario. My wife and I rented a cottage about a 15 minute walk away from the shoreline which was a nice relaxing promenade for us. This beach is stunning. It's like being in the Caribbean (without the palm trees)! The sand is fine and the fresh water from Lake Ontario was warm; the shoreline is shallow and extends at least 30 meters into the lake before it rises above your shoulders. On windy days, there are white caps and impressive waves washing onto the shoreline. I began these two sketches on the beach and finished them in the cottage.

Ink drawings with Micron pens in a Fabriano sketchbook. Top sketch 21 x 12 cm (8.5 x 4.75 inches), Bottom sketch 22 x 11cm (8.5 x 4.25 inches).

Sand Lake, Ontario # 5 / Le lac Sand, Ontario # 5

The cottage next to the one that we rented at Sand Lake, Ontario had a small but useful boat house on the shoreline. I imagine that it was great for storing paddles, safety jackets, fishing rods and all sorts of things essential for enjoying water sports on a lake. At first view, I knew that the scene would make a great subject for a painting. The boat house was unique, the trees were magnificent and the reflections on the water were transfixing. The scene depicted a classical cottage lifestyle.

Watercolour with Micron pens in a Fabriano sketchbook, 27 x 18.5 cm (10.5 x 7.25 inches).

Davis Lock, Rideau Canal / L'écluse Davis, canal Rideau

The Rideau Canal waterway has 47 lock stations that allow boats to travel between lakes and rivers with different water levels. These locks were completed by 1832 and operate today by Parks Canada in the same fashion as they did when they were initially built. The locks don't rely on electrical or fuel engines to function. They operate solely on man-power and gravity. This highlights the ingenuity and skill of that era. Davis Lock is situated between Sand Lake and Opinicon Lake, Ontario. The difference in water level between the two lakes seemed to be around 3 m (10 feet) and the locksmiths could pass a boat within 15 minutes. It was very impressive. I made this ink drawing from reference photos that I took at the lock.

Sand Lake, Ontario # 4 / Le lac Sand, Ontario # 4

Can there be anything more relaxing than laying in a hammock next to a lake with a light summer breeze blowing? This seemed like the perfect scene of life on the Rideau Lakes in the middle of summer that was just asking to be painted. I admit that the only things missing from my painting are a fishing boat and a loon in the background. I sketched this scene at Sand Lake, Ontario, and later added watercolour and a touch of gouache paint.

Watercolour, gouache and ink in a Fabriano sketchbook, 27 x 18 cm (10.5 x 7 inches).

Sand Lake, Ontario # 3 / Le lac Sand, Ontario # 3

Sitting on a dock at Sand Lake (Ontario), I made this quick sketch of the shoreline. From what I saw of the landscape around the lake, there was a lovely variety of vistas - bays with lily pads, rocky shorelines and some cottages almost on the water! If I had a boat, I could have gone on sketching the panorama of the lake for a long long time. But its summer and a time to relax. I was very content simply to sketch the sites around me.

Ink drawing with a Micron pen and a Pentel brush pen in a Fabriano sketchbook, 21 x13 cm (8.25 x 5 inches).

Sand Lake, Ontario # 1 / Le lac Sand, Ontario # 1

Sand Lake is part of a chain of lakes that form the Rideau Canal waterway in Eastern Ontario. (Of course, the 200 km waterway is also formed by the Cataraqui River, the Rideau River and the Rideau Canal.) Sand Lake is a beautiful lake with locks at either end - Davis Lock and Jones Falls Locks - making the water level extremely stable and accessible to pleasure boats from far and near. We rented one of the many cottages which are found along the shoreline and were able to do some swimming, kayaking and just-plain-lounging-in-the-shade. My sketch is of a small rocky point near our cottage. The sketch should also have included a family of loons that we frequently saw (and heard) during our stay. The haunting song of the loons made for a perfect setting.

Ink drawing with Micron and Pentel brush pens in a Fabriano sketchbook, 21 x 13 cm (8.25 x 5 inches).

Last year, my wife and I took a dinner cruise from Kingston, Ontario to the Thousand Islands in the St Lawrence River.  We've visited the Thousand Islands several times in the past, and each one is memorable. This time we cruised through the Admiralty Islands on the Canadian side of the river near Ganonoque. The scenery was beautiful. One of the highlights was a couple of swans near one of the islands. The captain steered far from them but I was able to take some reference photos with a telephoto lens. This is the result. Being inspired, I began this painting shortly after our visit but put it aside due to other matters. Recently, the thought of returning to the islands gave me an incentive to finish my painting.

Watercolour on Fabriano Artistico cotton paper, 40 x 30 cm (16 x 12 inches).

The Rideau Canal waterway stretches 200 km between Ottawa and Kingston, Ontario. It was completed in 1832 and its 47 locks still operates in the same fashion as when it was constructed. My sketch is of the first set of locks next to the Ottawa River. The locks lie at the foot of a high escarpment with the Parliament Buildings on one side and the Chateau Laurier Hotel on the other.  It's an impressive site. You can find a small local museum there as well as bike and walking paths that go along the river and canal.

Watercolour and ink in a Fabriano sketchbook, 23.5 x 12 cm (9.25 x 4.75 inches).

Lac Leamy Park - The path goes on and on / Le parc du lac Leamy - Le sentier continue

One month ago today, I made a sketch at this same spot. At that time, Lac Leamy Park was flooded and the bike path ended roughly where the sign was. Today, the park is alive and the bike path goes on without obstructions. Big change. It's amazing how quickly things alter at this time of year. Within the same month, the daffodils and tulips came and went; the cherry and apple blossoms flourished and fell; and the bare branches of the trees transformed into verdant canopies. It's magical. Hopefully the changes will slow down so that we can better appreciate this wonderful time of the year.

Ink drawing using a Faber-Castell fountain pen with Manuscript ink in a Fabriano sketchbook, 13 x 17.5 cm (5 x 7 inches).

Lac Leamy: End of the Road / Le lac Leamy : Fin du chemin

I took my first bike ride of the season today and headed towards my favourite spot: Lac Leamy Park. Sadly, the park was subjected to flooding which has once again hit the entire Ottawa River Basin. This is the fourth time in recent years (2017, 2019 and 2023) that the floodwaters have risen so high. While the water levels are beginning to recede, the flooding has already lasted for over a week. Taking in the scene, I began this sketch on my bike. Hopefully in a couple of weeks everything will return to normal.

Ink drawing using a Lamy Safari pen with Platinum carbon ink in a Fabriano sketchbook,  13 x 17.5 cm (5 x 7 inches).

In 1995, I made this sketch of a tree in a field. I believe it was inspired by the massive trees found along the Rideau River in Overbrook or Vanier where I often walked as a kid. Today parklands stretch all along the eastern shore of the Rideau River from the majestic falls which flow into the Ottawa River to Mooney's Bay, some 12.5 km in distance. To provide access to these parklands, in the 1970s paths were built along the shoreline. Cyclists and pedestrians were then able to enjoy and to explore the many interesting locations next to the river - rapids, bird sanctuaries, small islands, rocky outcropings, meadows and forested areas. It's great to contemplate this bucolic scenery right in the heart of the city.

Watercolour and ink sketch

Old tree in Lac Leamy Park / Un vieil arbre au parc Lac Leamy

On a recent walk to Lac Leamy Park, I stopped by an old tree at the side of a pathway. At this time of year, I couldn't tell if it was an oak or maple tree but it certainly looked well over 100 years old. And not too healthy. However, it'll probably stand there for decades more unless it becomes a hazard to pedestrians or cyclists. I was impressed by its thick bark, unusual bumps and large limbs. A good subject for a painting.

Watercolour with Lamy Safari pen and Platinum carbon black ink in a Hand-Book Journal, 17 x 22 cm (6.75 x 8.75 inches).

A.Y. Jackson's 'Winter Night' / « La Nuit d'Hiver » d'A.Y. Jackson

This is a  reproduction of A.Y. Jackson's Winter Night that I made as free-hand ink drawing. Jackson (1882-1974) was a Canadian landscape painter and original member of the Group of Seven. In 1925, along with other members of the Group, he created four small lithographs for an exhibition. The lithograph which I copied, called Winter Night,  was 13 x 16.5 cm (5.5 x 6.75 inches) in size and limited to 100 printings. It doesn't depict a specific location like many of Jackson's oil paintings but reflects his interest in winter landscapes. Apparently he made an oil painting inspired by this lithograph, but I haven't been able to locate it. Point-au-Persil (below) is as close a scene as I can find. While Jackson is mostly remembered for his oil paintings, he began his art training in Montreal lithograph companies. He's known to have made about 40 lithographs over his lifetime. I liked this lithograph because it captures the landscape that we now find in Ottawa-Gatineau. The darkness of the sky and trees are clearly delineated. It's a beautiful small piece that allowed me to learn something about Jackson's style while I made this reproduction. (Incidentally, my new sketchbook was able to take the large amounts of ink that I used without showing up on the reverse side. And the lines didn't bleed on the paper.)

Ink drawing with a Lamy Safari pen and Platinum Carbon ink in a Fabriano Venezia sketchbook, (13 x 17 cm 5 x 6.75 inches).

I'm not a morning person, so I don't normally notice the sun rise ... except maybe in winter when dawn and sunrise begin around 7 am. I know that I'm really missing something special during the other seasons of the year when I'm just too sleepy to rouse myself awake. Recently, from some photos that I took of my back yard at daybreak, I created this small oil painting of the sun rising over the frozen neighbourhood. Everything is very still - no birds flying and no squirrels scampering over branches. It's as if the world is holding its breathe to witness another miracle.

When I'm creating a painting, I try to capture the essence of the scene but occasionally leave some things out or alter things that some people might consider essential. For example, in this painting I purposely left out the electric power lines running between the properties. While they're an integral part of the neighbourhood, when I was in awe of the sunrise I really wasn't considering the power lines. Does it make my painting less interesting, or less truthful of the scene? Maybe yes; maybe no; it's for each artist and observer to determine.

Oil painting, 40 x 30 cm (16 x 12 inches).
