Hartwell's Lock / L'écluse de Hartwell

This is a painting that I started in September after going on a bike trip along the Rideau Canal in Ottawa to Hartwell's Lock. At this location, the canal lies between the Carleton University campus and the general area of the Experimental Farm (someday to become the Canadensis Botanical Garden). The large impressive building in the background of my painting is the Dunton Tower on the university campus. In my time when I went to school there, it was called the Arts Tower. The canal locks are also impressive to observe, especially when a boat is passing through. With a little skill, you can walk across the lock with your bicycle to follow the bike path on the other shore leading to Mooney's Bay. And that's exactly what I did!

Voici une peinture que j'ai commencée en septembre après avoir fait un voyage à vélo le long du canal Rideau à Ottawa jusqu'à l'écluse de Hartwell. À cet endroit, le canal se situe entre le campus de l'Université Carleton et la zone générale de la Ferme expérimentale (qui deviendra un jour le Jardin botanique Canadensis). Le grand bâtiment impressionnant à l’arrière-plan de mon tableau est la tour Dunton sur le campus universitaire. À l’époque où j’allais à l’école là-bas, on l’appelait la Tour des Arts. Les écluses du canal sont également impressionnantes à observer, notamment lors du passage d'un bateau. Avec un peu d'habileté, vous pourrez traverser l'écluse à pied avec votre vélo pour suivre la piste cyclable sur l'autre rive menant à Mooney's Bay. Et c'est exactement ce que j'ai fait !

A walk in Rockliffe Park / Une promenade au parc Rockliffe

 

Autumn has now entered a new phase or state where the golden glow of only a few weeks ago has completely disappeared. However, when my wife and I went for a pleasant stroll in Rockliffe Park near the Rockeries around late October this was the scene that surrounded us. It was really exceptional and just begged to be painted.

L’automne est maintenant entré dans une nouvelle phase ou un nouvel état où la lueur dorée d’il y a seulement quelques semaines a complètement disparu. Cependant, lorsque ma femme et moi sommes allés faire une agréable promenade dans le parc Rockliffe, près des Rockeries, vers la fin octobre, c'était la scène qui nous entourait. C'était vraiment exceptionnel et ne demandait qu'à être peint.

Pebble Beach

I suspect that there are a lot of places in the world named 'Pebble Beach'. This one is found in Prince Edward County in Ontario on the shoreline of Lake Ontario. I began sketching it on site while camping there this summer and finally finished it recently at home. Its a beautiful location with, of course, millions of pebbles on the beach and an immense rock shelf extending far out into the lake. At this point, Lake Ontario is about 80 km (50 miles) wide with Rochester NY lying roughly to the south. Although this is in the heart of North America, you feel like you are in the Maritimes.

Je soupçonne qu'il existe de nombreux endroits dans le monde nommés « Pebble Beach ». Celui-ci se trouve dans le comté de Prince Edward en Ontario, sur les rives du lac Ontario. J'ai commencé à le dessiner sur place quand je faisais du camping cet été et je l'ai finalement terminé récemment à la maison. C'est un endroit magnifique avec, bien sûr, des millions de roches sur la plage et un immense plateau rocheux s'étendant loin dans le lac. À cette endroit, le lac Ontario a une largeur d'environ 80 km (50 miles) et Rochester NY se trouve à peu près au sud. Même si nous sommes au cœur de l’Amérique du Nord, on a l’impression d’être dans les Maritimes.

Deer in Lac Leamy Park / Les cerfs au parc du Lac Leamy

During a bike trip through Lac Leamy Park in Gatineau, I once encountered a couple of deer quietly making their way through the forest not too far from the bike path. I quickly took a couple of reference photos before they vanished into the thick bush (I already had thoughts that this would make a good composition). Though I returned to this site several times, I never saw the deer there again. I guess this is a good reason for artists to always have a camera handy. Anyway, I took my time in painting this scene as I wanted to capture some of the chaos of the forest floor and magic of these lovely animals.

Lors d'une balade à vélo dans le parc du Lac Leamy à Gatineau, un jour j'ai croisé un couple de chevreuils qui se frayaient tranquillement un chemin à travers la forêt non loin de la piste cyclable. J'ai rapidement pris quelques photos de référence avant qu'elles ne disparaissent dans l'épais buisson (je pensais déjà que cela ferait une bonne composition). Bien que je sois revenu sur ce site plusieurs fois, je n'y ai jamais revu les cerfs. Je suppose que c'est une bonne raison pour que les artistes aient toujours un appareil photo à portée de main. Quoi qu'il en soit, j'ai pris mon temps pour peindre cette scène car je voulais capturer une partie du chaos du sol forestier et de la magie de ces adorables animaux.
