Davis Lock, Rideau Canal / L'écluse Davis, canal Rideau

The Rideau Canal waterway has 47 lock stations that allow boats to travel between lakes and rivers with different water levels. These locks were completed by 1832 and operate today by Parks Canada in the same fashion as they did when they were initially built. The locks don't rely on electrical or fuel engines to function. They operate solely on man-power and gravity. This highlights the ingenuity and skill of that era. Davis Lock is situated between Sand Lake and Opinicon Lake, Ontario. The difference in water level between the two lakes seemed to be around 3 m (10 feet) and the locksmiths could pass a boat within 15 minutes. It was very impressive. I made this ink drawing from reference photos that I took at the lock.

Sand Lake, Ontario # 1 / Le lac Sand, Ontario # 1

Sand Lake is part of a chain of lakes that form the Rideau Canal waterway in Eastern Ontario. (Of course, the 200 km waterway is also formed by the Cataraqui River, the Rideau River and the Rideau Canal.) Sand Lake is a beautiful lake with locks at either end - Davis Lock and Jones Falls Locks - making the water level extremely stable and accessible to pleasure boats from far and near. We rented one of the many cottages which are found along the shoreline and were able to do some swimming, kayaking and just-plain-lounging-in-the-shade. My sketch is of a small rocky point near our cottage. The sketch should also have included a family of loons that we frequently saw (and heard) during our stay. The haunting song of the loons made for a perfect setting.

Ink drawing with Micron and Pentel brush pens in a Fabriano sketchbook, 21 x 13 cm (8.25 x 5 inches).

The Rideau Canal waterway stretches 200 km between Ottawa and Kingston, Ontario. It was completed in 1832 and its 47 locks still operates in the same fashion as when it was constructed. My sketch is of the first set of locks next to the Ottawa River. The locks lie at the foot of a high escarpment with the Parliament Buildings on one side and the Chateau Laurier Hotel on the other.  It's an impressive site. You can find a small local museum there as well as bike and walking paths that go along the river and canal.

Watercolour and ink in a Fabriano sketchbook, 23.5 x 12 cm (9.25 x 4.75 inches).

The skating season is almost over on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa. Perhaps a cold snap forecasted for this weekend may permit one last hurrah, but my feeling is that spring is just around the corner. Most people have been very happy with the results on the canal this season - last year, it was barely open for ten days and the year before, it was completely closed. The sketch I made is of the park around Patterson Creek (which is a part of the Rideau Canal system). Many people lace up their skates here and join the thousands of skaters on the main skateway which is 8 km long (almost 5 miles). This year, a snowy pathway has also been added to the skateway which permits joggers and pedestrians to enjoy the canal.

Watercolour and ink in a Fabriano watercolour sketchbook, 27 x 17 cm (10.5 x 7.75 inches).

Last summer, I spent an afternoon at Patterson Creek next to the Rideau Canal in Ottawa. My wife and I had lunch at the newly installed Bistro (of which I posted an ink sketch previously - see below) and then we walked around the lovely watershed and marveled at the beautiful willows and maples. At the time, I intended to make a painting of the site from reference photos that I took, however it's taken me more time than I anticipated. But what's the rush, eh? As you may know, I've painted this area several times over the years in different seasons (see some paintings below). I'm attracted to this section of the Rideau Canal which I've enjoyed throughout my life as a kid with my parents, as a teenager with my wife (as my girlfriend), as a parent with my kids, and now in senior years with my wife again. I think it's rather special to have a sort of bond with a particular area over a lifetime. I'll certainly have to paint it at least one more time again.

Oil painting, 40 x 60 cm (16 x 24 inches).

Peinture à l'huile, 40 x 60 cm (16 x 24 pouces).

Hartwell's Lock / L'écluse de Hartwell

This is a painting that I started in September after going on a bike trip along the Rideau Canal in Ottawa to Hartwell's Lock. At this location, the canal lies between the Carleton University campus and the general area of the Experimental Farm (someday to become the Canadensis Botanical Garden). The large impressive building in the background of my painting is the Dunton Tower on the university campus. In my time when I went to school there, it was called the Arts Tower. The canal locks are also impressive to observe, especially when a boat is passing through. With a little skill, you can walk across the lock with your bicycle to follow the bike path on the other shore leading to Mooney's Bay. And that's exactly what I did!

Patterson Creek is a smallish canal which branches into the much larger Rideau Canal system in downtown Ottawa. A lovely community park surrounds it with several mature willow trees, footpaths and lawns. I've made a few paintings and drawings of this area in the past. It's quite idyllic. There's an old brick building next to the canal which for decades, I believe, was used as a sort of maintenance depot. Its a very unique sort of structure. In recent years, its been converted into a café much to the pleasure of people interested in enjoying this area. I stopped for a there for a luncheon this summer and began a quick sketch which I've finally completed in ink.

Ink drawing in a Leuchttrum 1917 sketchbook, 28 x 20 cm (11,25 x 8 inches).

Solitary skater / Patineur solitaire

Winterlude starts this weekend and the Rideau Canal skateway in Ottawa has reopened after a couple of weeks of warm weather. At least warm enough to melt ice. However, the weatherman promises near perfect weather for skating this weekend with daytime highs around -5C and night lows of -15C. Regrettably, this is still a little too crisp for me to sketch outdoors.
Technical note: I made this oil painting alla prima in the comfort of my home from a beautiful photo that Tony Caldwell took on January 31 which was published in the Ottawa Citizen. I usually scan my smaller watercolour sketches but took a photo of this painting at night. The reproduction didn't come out nearly as well as I had hoped - too much glare from the wet oil paint, and colours that were too warm from house lighting. (I'll try to copy my painting again at some point in the future during the daylight.)
Oil painting, 30.5 x 40.6 cm (12 x 16 inches).

Peinture à l'huile, 30,5 x 40,6 cm (12 x 16 pouces).

Below Confederation Square / Au-dessous la Place de la Confédération

One of my favourite bike routes is along the Rideau Canal in downtown Ottawa. It's about 12 km from my home so I like to take a short break when I arrive near it.  As an additional incentive, there are also great sites to sketch in this area. This image is of a spot on the canal that's directly below Confederation Square and next to the National Arts Centre. A nice calm area next to the busy traffic above.

The Rideau Canal Lockstation in Ottawa is just below Parliament Hill and the entrance to the Ottawa River. It's really in a marvellous location . . .  and fortunately for me, it's across from a bike route that I've been using lately. In spring, the water level of the canal is replenished having been almost drained in the winter to protect the structures. During this period, there's usually a lot of activity around the locks with large tourist boats returning to their docks on the river. This causes the opening and closing of the locks - which in turn creates small waterfalls over the locks.
Pigma Micron pens in a Moleskine sketchbook.

Patterson Creek / Le ruisseau Patterson

Now that the fine weather is here, I've started my regime of cycling-and-sketching once again. It gives me a chance to do some good cardio exercising as well as finding some time to do a little sketching pleine air. On this first day I managed to cycle around 30 km and spend about a half hour sketching this scene on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa. My sketching routine is to first outline the scene in pencil and then to start inking. Given my time restraints, I also take some photos of the scene and finish the inking later at my convenience at home. This system works for me - it gives me a chance to catch my breath when cycling, and it also puts something on my artistic to-do list. This scene, of course, is of Patterson Creek which I have sketched and painted several times in the past but mostly with winter scenes.

This is my final sketch of Patterson Creek in winter for this year. As it now stands, the weather is getting  increasingly warmer and a scene like this one will soon disappear for another year. Of course, skating on the Rideau Canal ended a few weeks ago (the shortest skating season on the canal in memory). Despite the mild winter, I must say that I look forward to using more greens in my sketches.

Looking into Patterson Creek / En regardant le ruisseau Patterson

It's interesting to take one location and to create multiple images from different perspectives. This is just what I've done with Patterson Creek ... well, this year its only two images so far, but if you look in my index at the bottom of this blog and search for 'Rideau Canal' you'll find many other paintings around Patterson Creek. In my last posting, the perspective was from the road looking over a warm-up shelter; in this posting, it's from under the bridge leading into Patterson Creek.

Patterson Creek / Le ruisseau Patterson

Patterson Creek - a small branch of the Rideau Canal in the Glebe section of Ottawa - is a lovely part of the city to explore no matter what season. However, I seem to have an inclination to paint it in winter when the skaters take over. The shadows and trees certainly make it very attractive to sketch. I'll have to make a mental note to paint it again when the colours and seasons change.

Rideau Canal by the Pretoria Bridge / Le canal Rideau près du pont Pretoria

I didn't want to let winter slip by without making another painting of the Rideau Canal skateway in downtown Ottawa. The skateway is such a beautiful icy promenade that winds its way through the city for about 10 km. It has no equivalent in the entire world. (And I'm not exaggerating either.) You can skate on it or just take a (slippery) stroll on it. There are warm-up cabins along the route as well as places where you can get a hot chocolate or some food. This scene is from a pedestian walkway overlooking the Pretoria Bridge and old Ottawa East. The trees here have always impressed me; they might have been growing in the same spot when the canal was built in the 1830s! The bridge also impressed me when I was a child - it looked like part of a castle drawbridge. Probably kids today have the same impression.

You can take a pleasant car ride along the Queen Elizabeth Driveway next to the Rideau Canal in Ottawa, or you can bicycle along it, or jog along it, or just simply take a quiet walk (as I did). Its very scenic at any time of the year. In winter, you can watch the skaters on the canal; in May, you can admire the tulip beds; in summer ... well, everything's just fine in summer; and in the autumn, you can visit the famer's market in Lansdowne Park or just take in the golden colours of the trees.

Another season's skating has opened on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa. It began earlier than usual because of the tremendous cold spell that we had in late December and early January. I haven't tried the ice yet, but it looks extremely good. I created this sketch from a photo that I took earlier this week while I was walking along Colonel By Drive. For ice conditions, check http://www.ncc-ccn.gc.ca/places-to-visit/rideau-canal-skateway/ice-conditions

Unless the temperature begins to cool off substantially, it looks like the skating season on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa will be over. It is a pity, but I have to admit that I enjoyed the relatively mild weather this winter.
