Maplelawn garden in September / Le jardin Maplelawn en septembre

I'm always happy to visit Maplelawn garden in the Westboro neighbourhood of Ottawa, no matter which season. I didn't expect much colour in mid-September but was pleasantly surprised by the number of flowers that persisted to bloom. Being walled off from the city traffic makes this small one acre garden a relaxing place to visit. This painting was an experiment using wet-in-wet watercolour techniques.

The Rideau Canal waterway stretches 200 km between Ottawa and Kingston, Ontario. It was completed in 1832 and its 47 locks still operates in the same fashion as when it was constructed. My sketch is of the first set of locks next to the Ottawa River. The locks lie at the foot of a high escarpment with the Parliament Buildings on one side and the Chateau Laurier Hotel on the other.  It's an impressive site. You can find a small local museum there as well as bike and walking paths that go along the river and canal.

In 1995, I made this sketch of a tree in a field. I believe it was inspired by the massive trees found along the Rideau River in Overbrook or Vanier where I often walked as a kid. Today parklands stretch all along the eastern shore of the Rideau River from the majestic falls which flow into the Ottawa River to Mooney's Bay, some 12.5 km in distance. To provide access to these parklands, in the 1970s paths were built along the shoreline. Cyclists and pedestrians were then able to enjoy and to explore the many interesting locations next to the river - rapids, bird sanctuaries, small islands, rocky outcropings, meadows and forested areas. It's great to contemplate this bucolic scenery right in the heart of the city.

Watercolour and ink sketch

Cobourg Street / La rue Cobourg

Recently, I had another opportunity to do some quick sketching in downtown Ottawa and parked on a part of Coburg Street that borders on the Lowertown neighbourhood. There's a lot of older houses here, some with a lot of character and some that need a little repair. I thought that this street corner would make a good subject for an ink drawing with the snow making everything look so clean. I sketched it in pencil, took some reference photos and finished it at home.

Cummings Bridge viewed from Vanier / Pont Cummings vu de Vanier

The small snowfalls that we've been receiving lately have all accumulated into a nice blanket of snow over the landscape and the thermometer has registered lower than normal for this time of year. Winter has definitely arrived. So last week when I had another occasion to do some plein air sketching, I did it from the comfort of my car. I parked in a neighbourhood of Vanier where I used to live and sketched the Cummings Bridge and North River Road in the foreground. It was a pleasant day and I enjoyed returning to my old neighbourhood. When I returned home, I drew over my rough pencil sketch with ink pens using two different toned inks - one black and another grey. By using the grey in the background, I was hoping to create a sense of depth.

Ink drawing in a Leuchtturm1917 sketchbook using Sakura Micron and Gellyroll Moonlight pens, 20 x 14 cm (8 x 5.5 inches).

Technical note: The Sakura Gellyroll Moonlight pens are impressive. Not only do they offer a variety of grey tones but they are opaque which allows you to draw over black lines! The Gellyroll Moonlight series of pens also come in different colours, some with a metalic finish.

The first snowfall of last week still lingers in certain parts of the Ottawa-Gatineau. While the streets and sidewalks have been snow-free for a while, lawns seem to have kept a thin crust of the white stuff to remind us that winter approaches. While waiting during my wife's appointment, I parked in downtown Ottawa and sketched MacDonald Gardens Park - a park with a pavilion on top of a hill. It was quiet. In a strange sort of way, the autumn cold kept most strollers away but the winter cold and deep snow had yet to arrive and attract the tobboganers on the hill!

Ink drawing in a Leuchtturm1917 sketchbook, 20 x 14 cm (8 x 5.5 inches).

Yesterday was a cold rainy day, not at all ideal for sketching outdoors. But I had some time on my hands and decided to find a parking spot where I could sketch something from the relative comfort of my car. I was fortunate to find this location on Stanley Street in the New Edinburgh neighbourhood of Ottawa next to the Rideau River. It was interesting to see that many of the trees still had their leaves bursting in golden autumn colours. However, there were also a lot of trees that didn't have so much as one leaf left on any branch. This is the grim reality as we approach winter. But on a more positive note, the beauty is that we can appreciate the sight of the tree limbs reaching up into the sky. I sketched the scene from my car with a pencil and inked it at home.

Ink drawing with a Jinhao fude pen and Platinum carbon black ink in a Leuchttrum 1917 sketchbook, 20 x 14 cm (8 x 5.5 inches).

Cummings Island again / L'île Cummings encore

Well, I made yet another sketch of Cummings Island, this time viewing it from the bridge beside it. As you can tell by now, the island has always caught my imagination. But these days most people don't give much of a thought about it despite the fact that it has an interesting history. From the 1840s to 1921, a bridge used to go across the river on the island rather than beside it. The island boasted a large store, post office and other services. It was a bustling centre. Then in 1921, the city of Ottawa built the present-day bridge about 12 meters next to the island resulting in its abandonment. From time to time there've been plans to transform the island into a cultural centre, but nothing has ever been realised. So, today the island quietly sits in the middle of the river watching time pass by.

Ink drawing in a Leuchtturm1917 sketchbook, 22 x 20 cm (8.75 x 8 inches)

On a couple of occasions lately, I had some extra time on my hands while I was waiting to pickup my wife at one of her appointments. Both times, I took walks along the Rideau River in the Ottawa neighbourhood of Vanier and began sketching. The sketches focused on an island in the river known as Cummings Island but they were made from two different perspectives: the top one was from the Riveraine Park in Vanier and the bottom one was from Strathcona Park in Sandy Hill. The island has been abandoned for nearly 100 years but has an interesting history. Click here for an article on its history Given the opportunity, maybe I can find other perspectives to sketch the island.

Ink drawings in a Leuchttrum 1917 sketchbook, about 20 x 13 cm (8 x 5 inches). The top one done with Micron pens and the bottom one done with a Jinhao fude pen with Platinum carbon black ink.

This is a small sketch that I just made of the shoreline along the Ottawa River. This shoreline is home to a lengthy pathway which can be used for cycling during the warm seasons, cross-country skiing in winter and walking throughout the year. While taking a walk there last weekend, my attention was drawn to two geodomes near the River House (formerly known as the Ottawa New Edinburgh Club boathouse). These round structures were made of wood and plexiglas and acted as warm-up huts. They looked like transparent igloos. I think that all the improvements that the National Capital Commission have been making to the shoreline on both sides of the river make it more appealing for people to explore the river and enjoy its beauty even in the depths of winter.

Watercolour and ink in a Fabriano watercolour sketchbook, 25 x 15 cm (10 x 6 inches).

The skating season is almost over on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa. Perhaps a cold snap forecasted for this weekend may permit one last hurrah, but my feeling is that spring is just around the corner. Most people have been very happy with the results on the canal this season - last year, it was barely open for ten days and the year before, it was completely closed. The sketch I made is of the park around Patterson Creek (which is a part of the Rideau Canal system). Many people lace up their skates here and join the thousands of skaters on the main skateway which is 8 km long (almost 5 miles). This year, a snowy pathway has also been added to the skateway which permits joggers and pedestrians to enjoy the canal.

Watercolour and ink in a Fabriano watercolour sketchbook, 27 x 17 cm (10.5 x 7.75 inches).

Wellington Street in Winter / La rue Wellington en hiver

Just over thirty years ago, I made this painting. Recently while I was looking for it on my computer, I realized that I never posted it on this website and wanted to correct that omission. My painting was sketched in pencil and coloured with watercolours; it was based on a lithograph made by Francis Schell and Thomas Hogan for the 1882 publication, Picturesque Canada (see below). The scene is of the same gate in the Wellington Wall that I sketched in my previous post. I find it fascinating to see how little this cityscape has changed in over 150 years. (Admittedly, the south side of Wellington Street has undergone tremendous changes over this period, but the view of Parliament Hill from this vantage point remains the same.) I was proud when my painting was published by the Canadian Parliamentary Review for the cover of its 1995/95 winter edition. The feeling was just as great as having it exhibited in a public gallery.

Watercolour, 40 x 30 cm (15.5 x 11.75 inches).

This is a sketch of the East Block (one of the parliamentary buildings in Ottawa). The perspective on this sketch is intentionally a bit lopsided - for my reference photo, I was looking straight up at the Southwest Tower of the East Block and attempted to focus on some of its grotesques and frescoes. I've always been impressed by the character of this building and had the good fortunate to have worked there for several years. The East Block was constructed between 1859 and 1866 when the city had a small population under 15,000 and was reached by steamboat from Montreal on a long day's journey when the river wasn't ice-bound. (Winter must have made the city very isolated in this era.) I find it amazing that such a grand building, which many consider to be a highlight of the architecture of the Victorian Age, could have been built in what was essentially a wilderness. While the Southwest Tower isn't as tall as the Peace Tower in the Centre Block or the Mackenzie Tower in the West Block, it commands attention due to its large ornamental windows, its cowbell-shaped roof and its beautiful stone carvings. An interesting article on the building by R.A.J. Phillips entitled, The House that History Built, can be read in the Canadian Parliamentary Review here. This is one of many images that I've made of the East Block and I hope to make many more.

Watercolour with ink in a Strathmore mixed media sketchbook, 19 x 21.5 cm (7.5 x 8.5 inches).

The refreshment stand at Hog's Back Park / Le kiosque de rafraîchissements au parc Hog's Back

This futuristic-looking refreshment stand or pavillion next to the Hog's Back Falls was built in 1955 as part of a post-War beautification project across Ottawa. It was designed by a local architect, James Watson Balharrie, who was also responsible for other buildings at Carleon University and the Sparks Street Mall. I always enjoyed stopping here for a snack as a teenager when I used to go to the beach next door at Mooney's Bay or when I was cycling in the vicinity. The building looked special, like something from Expo '67. I still enjoy stopping here for a walk in the park and a view of the magnificent falls tumbling over the rocks into the river below.

Pen and ink sketch in a Moleskine watercolour sketchbook, 28 x 17 cm (11 x 6.75 inches)

The River House / La Maison riveraine

There's an interesting building on the Ottawa River which has existed there ever since 1914. It was built by the Ottawa New Edinburgh Club (ONEC) and served for many years as a centre for canoeing, rowing and sailing. Last year major renovations were completed by the National Capital Commission and the building opened up anew with a café, outdoor patios, a ballroom for rent, an outside swimming pool, and offices for the Ottawa River Keeper. It's a lovely spot for anyone interested in activities on or by the river. I visited it last autumn and enjoyed a tour of the building and a light lunch on the patio overlooking the water. It brought back memories of when I learnt to sail at its marina (RA Sail) and later when I docked my boat there. It's great to see a heritage structure like this being repurposed into a something that everyone can enjoy.

Tropical greenhouse / La serre tropicale

This elegant little greenhouse is found at the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa and now known as the Tropical Greenhouse. It was first built in 1928 on Major's Hill Park and moved to its present location on Maple Dr. in 1938.  It's the only greenhouse at the Experimental Farm which is open to the public. A long time ago, I remember going to chrysanthemum shows there, however today it holds a nice collection of cacti. Admittedly it is rather small and in need of some repairs but I find that it's an attractive structure which reflects the architecture of the city from a bygone age.

Last summer, I spent an afternoon at Patterson Creek next to the Rideau Canal in Ottawa. My wife and I had lunch at the newly installed Bistro (of which I posted an ink sketch previously - see below) and then we walked around the lovely watershed and marveled at the beautiful willows and maples. At the time, I intended to make a painting of the site from reference photos that I took, however it's taken me more time than I anticipated. But what's the rush, eh? As you may know, I've painted this area several times over the years in different seasons (see some paintings below). I'm attracted to this section of the Rideau Canal which I've enjoyed throughout my life as a kid with my parents, as a teenager with my wife (as my girlfriend), as a parent with my kids, and now in senior years with my wife again. I think it's rather special to have a sort of bond with a particular area over a lifetime. I'll certainly have to paint it at least one more time again.

Oil painting, 40 x 60 cm (16 x 24 inches).

This is a painting that I started in September after going on a bike trip along the Rideau Canal in Ottawa to Hartwell's Lock. At this location, the canal lies between the Carleton University campus and the general area of the Experimental Farm (someday to become the Canadensis Botanical Garden). The large impressive building in the background of my painting is the Dunton Tower on the university campus. In my time when I went to school there, it was called the Arts Tower. The canal locks are also impressive to observe, especially when a boat is passing through. With a little skill, you can walk across the lock with your bicycle to follow the bike path on the other shore leading to Mooney's Bay. And that's exactly what I did!

A walk in Rockliffe Park / Une promenade au parc Rockliffe

Autumn has now entered a new phase or state where the golden glow of only a few weeks ago has completely disappeared. However, when my wife and I went for a pleasant stroll in Rockliffe Park near the Rockeries around late October this was the scene that surrounded us. It was really exceptional and just begged to be painted.

Patterson Creek is a smallish canal which branches into the much larger Rideau Canal system in downtown Ottawa. A lovely community park surrounds it with several mature willow trees, footpaths and lawns. I've made a few paintings and drawings of this area in the past. It's quite idyllic. There's an old brick building next to the canal which for decades, I believe, was used as a sort of maintenance depot. Its a very unique sort of structure. In recent years, its been converted into a café much to the pleasure of people interested in enjoying this area. I stopped for a there for a luncheon this summer and began a quick sketch which I've finally completed in ink.
