Wellington Street in Winter / La rue Wellington en hiver

 

Just over thirty years ago, I made this painting. Recently while I was looking for it on my computer, I realized that I never posted it on this website and wanted to correct that omission. My painting was sketched in pencil and coloured with watercolours; it was based on a lithograph made by Francis Schell and Thomas Hogan for the 1882 publication, Picturesque Canada (see below). The scene is of the same gate in the Wellington Wall that I sketched in my previous post. I find it fascinating to see how little this cityscape has changed in over 150 years. (Admittedly, the south side of Wellington Street has undergone tremendous changes over this period, but the view of Parliament Hill from this vantage point remains the same.) I was proud when my painting was published by the Canadian Parliamentary Review for the cover of its 1995/95 winter edition. The feeling was just as great as having it exhibited in a public gallery.

Il y a un peu plus de trente ans, j'ai peint ce tableau. Récemment, quand je le cherchais sur mon ordinateur, je me suis rendu compte que je ne l'avais jamais publié sur ce site Web et je voulais corriger cette omission. Mon tableau a été esquissé au crayon et coloré à l'aquarelle; il est basé sur une lithographie réalisée par Francis Schell et Thomas Hogan pour la publication de 1882, Picturesque Canada (voir ci-dessous). La scène représente la même porte du mur Wellington que j'ai esquissée dans mon article précédent. Je trouve fascinant de voir à quel point ce paysage urbain a peu changé en plus de 150 ans. (Il est vrai que le côté sud de la rue Wellington a subi d'énormes changements au cours de cette période, mais la vue de la colline du Parlement de ce point d'observation reste la même.) J'étais fier lorsque mon tableau a été publié par la Revue parlementaire canadienne pour la couverture de son édition d'hiver 1995/96. Le sentiment était aussi formidable que de l'avoir exposé dans une galerie publique.
