Old willow tree / Vieux saule

As I mentioned in a previous posting, there are many majestic trees in Prince Edward County (Ontario). This is an illustration that I made of one very large and tall willow tree next to the cottage that we rented. I couldn't take my eyes off it. Its bark was especially thick and sinuous and as I examined it, it seemed to take on shapes that looked like faces. The willow reminded me of the many fantasy trees that Arthur Rackham illustrated for fairy tale books like the Brothers Grimm. In this spirit, I began to draw the tree on site with a fountain pen in ink. When I started to add watercolour paint to the illustration at home, I was shocked to find out that the ink wasn't waterproof. The paint mixed with the ink creating a mess and destroying my illustration! Fortunately I had taken a photo of my initial  ink drawing and was able to transfer it to the Procreate app on my iPad Pro and 'paint' it digitally. It's not at all what I planned. Maybe someday I'll recreate the drawing with waterproof ink and finally paint it with watercolours.

Recently I spent some time in the Eastern Townships of Québec - a lovely area with majestic mountains, quiet lakes and small interesting villages. Among other things, I visited an abbey, a vinyard and the Three Pines Café owned by local author, Louise Penny. While we were resting at a cottage, I took some time to make a couple of rough sketches and took some reference photos as I usually do. Later when I returned home, I inked this image but when I finished, it didn't capture the night scene as I intended. So, I then scanned and coloured the inked image on my iPad Pro using Procreate to come up with this version.

For those acquainted with Parliament Hill in Ottawa, the brick and wrought iron wall separating the parliament buildings from the city streets (or as some would say, separating the Crown from the town) is approximately 600 m (2000 ft) in length and an built in the Gothic Revival style like the parliamentary buildings on the Hill. Known as the Wellington Wall, it was designed by Frederick Alexander and built from 1872 to 1875.  Unfortunately I couldn't find much more information about it in my research. A central gate found in the Wall in front of the Centennial Flame is called the Queen's Gate but there are several other gates along the Wall which do not appear to have been given names despite their distinct beauty. The two images I created are of the gate at the corner of Wellington and Bank Streets.

Ink sketch made with a glass pen and Noodlers American Eel Black Ink in a Strathmore Mixed Media sketchbook, 21 x 16 cm (8.25 x 6.25 inches). Gate in Foggy Weather sketch, scanned and coloured with an iPadPro using the Procreate app; Bank Street Gate sketch coloured with watercolours.

Wizards, Magicians and Such / Sorciers, magiciens et autres

They’re called Wizards, Mages, Sorcerers, Magicians, Witches, Druids and such. Most of my life I’ve been amused by stories about them in comics (The Wizard of Id), in books (The Once and Future King, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Wizard of Earthsea, the Harry Potter series) and in films (The Sword in the Stone, The Wizard of Oz, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus). It’s hard to say exactly what attracted me to these characters. Wizards are often portrayed as wise, helpful or powerful which makes them appealing. But they may also be knaves, fools or schemers. One thing for certain, they make wonderful characters for story telling or, in my case, cartoons.

Why did I choose to start sketching wizards on my iPad? I confess that I don’t really know. When I began, I felt that it was nonsense and a waste of energy (unlike the so-called serious painting that I was neglecting). But perhaps because I didn’t attach any importance to this project, I found that it was relaxing to sit back and sketch on my iPad and it took my mind off other things. It became a sort of meditation.

One great thing about the iPad (or any digital tablet) is that it takes absolutely no time to set up and begin painting. This means that you can work on an image if you only have five minutes available, which is next to impossible for oil or watercolour painting. Month by month, I found myself frequently using coffee breaks and small periods of time sketching on my iPad. My collection of wizard cartoons grew and grew primarily because it was so easy to work on cartoons at any moment.

Another great thing about the iPad is that you can make major alterations to a picture without much effort. Change the colour, add more characters, move things around, erase distracting backgrounds. It’s like silly putty. If I were to attempt some of these changes in gouache, acrylic or oil paint, it would be very difficult, time consuming and frustrating. However with a tablet, it’s a piece of cake and if you don’t like the results, you can always go back to your original. My rough sketches began to look more refined.

Where did I get my ideas for my cartoons? Anywhere and nowhere. Some came from great paintings that I reimagined, movies that I dreamt up, phrases that sparked my imagination, old cartoons of mine that I recycled, or well known stories that I illustrated. My sole aim was to try and make something funny or charming.

My wizards are all slightly different (except for the compulsory beard, robe and peaked hat that the magician’s union requires - magic staffs are optional) which means that the story line doesn’t follow the trials and tribulations of a particular character. So to provide some sort of continuity to my collection I set each cartoon in an illustrated frame or border like a medieval illuminated text. Along with a title, they become a collection. In a couple of cases, the frames may have actually taken me more time to create than the cartoon! I also attached a limerick to each illustration with the help of AI.

I’ve waited until now to share these cartoons with you because I frankly didn’t know what to do with them. They didn’t fit with other artwork that I made which were mostly landscapes, flowers or other realistic images. I thought by including them in this website, it may confuse the reader who is looking just for realistic artwork or just for comics. So I created a new website for my cartoons and illustrations, Michaels Imaginarium. I hope that you like these cartoons as much as I've enjoyed creating them.

 -----

Lately I haven't felt like undertaking any large or complicated paintings, so I made these small sketches of some flowers growing in my garden - some day lilies and some shasta daisies. The first black and white sketch was made with Micon pens and the second with a fude pen and some Platinum Carbon ink. In the second series of images, I scanned the sketches and coloured them on my iPadPro in the Procreate App.

Pen and ink sketches in a Leuchtturm sketchbook, 18 x 12 cm (7 x 4.5 inches) each.

Nine birds in an oak tree / Neuf oiseaux dans un chêne

I created this image from birds that regularly visit or permanently reside in Ottawa-Gatineau. Of course, there are many more varieties that can be found here, but I pictured these favourites of mine together in a single tree. (In this particular case, it's nine birds in an oak tree. Sounds like a Christmas carole doesn't it?) This image was created on my iPad Pro in an app called Procreate over a long period of time. I would work on it during short coffee breaks and other moments when I had more serious blocks of time available. Procreate tells me that I took over 23 hours to 'paint' it. Bah! There must be something wrong with the app because it didn't feel like much of a burden. My idea in creating this image was to have each bird placed so that it could exist as a separate painting. Maybe someday I'll take this notion forward and create a larger oil painting or nine paintings (my iPad tells me that this one is about 26 x 26 cm or 10 x 10 inches in physical width and height). It was great fun to create this image.

This time of year makes me reflect over the passage of time. The growing season is now all but finished and plants are about to go into dormancy for the winter season. Good gardeners are already preparing for the upcoming spring by pruning their plants, mulching, and planting spring bulbs. While I looked at my cherry tree, I imagined how it appeared since last winter and then came up with the idea of creating this four-paneled illustration of a tree through the seasons - lignum per tempora - as I think they would say in Latin.

Digital image created with an iPad Pro and the app Procreate.

Walking through Four Seasons / La marche à travers les quatre saisons

Although autumn hasn't officially started, there's a sense that we've left the best of summer and are now heading towards another season. The season of falling leaves, harvests, shorter days and cooler nights. Reflecting on all of this made me create this illustration of walking through the seasons.

Digital image made with an iPad Pro and Procreate.

Several times in the past I've mentioned that I go cycling and make sketches of the places that I visit. It's a nice past-time that gives me some exercise while permitting me to do some plein air sketching or painting. My process is usually to just make a rough pencil drawing of the scene, take some reference photos, and then ink and paint the final image in the comfort of my home. It's great fun.

The present image is a sort of cartoon collage of me cycling along an imaginary bike path. I made it on my iPad Pro using an application called Procreate. I was inspired to create this cartoon/illustration after 'reading' some interesting cartoons of artists like Grant Snider, Tom Gauld, and Chris Ware. My idea was to create a 'story' using panels that form a single picture. An enjoyable frivolity.

Postscript: After thinking about my initial image (below), I decided to change it and add a sketcher to a panel. It fits in better with what I was trying to convey. And the beauty of digital painting is that it's very easy to adjust an image.

Digital image using an iPad Pro and Procreate.

If you sit on a dock for a while, you'll notice a lot of activity on the water. Mysterious ripples may appear from time to time as well as splashes when a predator fish - like a pike - goes hunting. However, the most spectacular splashes may happen when a kingfisher dives from its perch to scoop up a small fish. It happens rather quickly so you have to be attentive or it'll just be another mysterious splash.

I created this image as a sort of comic to portray the 'story' of a kingfisher getting its lunch. I'm a great admirer of cartoonists who have the ability of conveying action and telling a story with just a few images. It's a wonderful contemporary art-form that's flourished.

Digital image with an iPad Pro and Procreate.

Snowy owls are large nocturnal birds seen on fairly rare occasions which gives them a certain magical quality. It’s no wonder that they’re often used as creatures of fantasy in literature and paintings. I imagined this scene while playing with one of my pen-and-ink sketches on my iPad. I scanned my paper drawing when I was at a crossroad on how I would carry on. I thought that maybe I could come up with more ideas on my iPad before I put more ink on paper. I then worked out some ideas digitally and came up with the notion of a snowy owl in flight and began to colour and resize a revised image on my iPad. That’s the power of digital painting – everything is flexible without limitation. In contrast, it would have been virtually impossible for me to add the owl to my paper sketch without starting from scratch. Anyway, I think that the snowy owl fits in nicely with the gothic architecture of the Parliament buildings ... and maybe some winter evening I might actually see one while strolling there.

Digital painting with the app Procreate on an iPad Pro using the scan of a pen-and-ink sketch.

Lost garden / Le jardin perdu

Just for fun, I sometimes like to play on my iPad Pro and create whimsical images. This illustration, which is a departure from my usual drawing or painting style, is one result. When I considered making this image, I thought that I would paint it in a realistic style. It would have meant a lot of work and I wasn't ready to commit the amount of energy and time that it would have demanded. So I just began playing on my iPad and gradually came up with this illustration. It still took a fair amount of time to complete but, as I have mentioned in previous postings, the iPad allows you to work without any setup or cleanup - meaning you can paint for 10 minutes and come back to paint later for 5 minutes. The cumulative effect means that you may have spent four hours on a painting but because you do it in small chunks of time, it doesn't feel like a lot of  time has been devoted to the image.
Digital image made with an iPad Pro and the Procreate app.

This is a digital painting that I made of the Leamy Lake Discharge Creek. I find this urban creek to be rather interesting. You can follow it on bike paths as it starts at a rather dirty source next to Highway 50 and makes its way to the Ottawa River. Along its shoreline there are some very attractive natural settings (like the one I painted), a couple of bridges (one exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists), a shipwreck (the Jean Richard/Ville de Vanier was shipwrecked and left in the creek in 1986 - see article here) and an archeological site (which extends from the creek along the Ottawa River). In the past, I've made a number of sketches of the creek while on my bicycle excursions in this area. I never seem to tire in exploring this area (even in winter).

Recently, the Ottawa Urban Sketchers sent a challenge to its members. We were asked to sketch from a window in the month of January (a time of the year when it's unthinkable - or certainly uncomfortable - to sketch outdoors). This was my offering - my kitchen window with a pot of basil sitting on the sill and my apple tree in the background.
I sketched this scene on watercolour paper with a pencil. Before painting it, I photographed the line drawn artwork and sent it to my iPad Pro where I 'painted' it with an app called Procreate. Altogether, it took me about two hours to paint this image but not all in one sitting. The advantage of painting with a tablet is that you can pick it up at any moment and spend either 5 minutes or 5 hours working on it. There's no setup or cleanup time to bother with - you simply turn your tablet on and immediately begin painting. There's also no problem to correct errors or to change a colour - something which may be extremely difficult with watercolours and challenging with oils or acrylics. The one disadvantage with digital painting is that you don't have a physical object to manipulate and exhibit.
Digital painting on an iPad Pro with Procreate.

The Starless Sea

I like to read books. All kinds of books - histories, detective and fantasy novels, non-fiction, biographies, etc. When I began reading my last novel - The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern - I thought that it might be fun to try and illustrate some sections since it's a very visually descriptive fantasy novel. However, I soon found out that this experiment was more challenging than I first thought. For instance, when you make illustrations for a book which you haven't finished reading, you may find descriptions in later chapters that provide more or different information pertaining to your illustration. It may even force you to drastically alter that image. This can be frustrating and is one reason why professional illustration is such a demanding art form. A professional illustrator must be very familiar with the entire story before starting. As well, they must deal with other matters such as the overall style of the illustrations and the demands of book editors. One thing that helped me in my little experiment was to use digital painting for my illustrations. Using my iPad, I could quickly flip from the text of the novel to my painting. It also made alterations much easier to do than with traditional methods like watercolour or ink drawing. This experiment was fun and allowed me to do two of the things that I most enjoy (reading and drawing) in a very comfortable manner.

(Note: While I enjoyed the beginning of this novel, I felt that it lost its appeal for me less than halfway through. But I won't get into that now, since its an entirely separate matter from the subject of this post.)
