Lac Leamy Park - The path goes on and on / Le parc du lac Leamy - Le sentier continue

One month ago today, I made a sketch at this same spot. At that time, Lac Leamy Park was flooded and the bike path ended roughly where the sign was. Today, the park is alive and the bike path goes on without obstructions. Big change. It's amazing how quickly things alter at this time of year. Within the same month, the daffodils and tulips came and went; the cherry and apple blossoms flourished and fell; and the bare branches of the trees transformed into verdant canopies. It's magical. Hopefully the changes will slow down so that we can better appreciate this wonderful time of the year.

Lac Leamy: End of the Road / Le lac Leamy : Fin du chemin

I took my first bike ride of the season today and headed towards my favourite spot: Lac Leamy Park. Sadly, the park was subjected to flooding which has once again hit the entire Ottawa River Basin. This is the fourth time in recent years (2017, 2019 and 2023) that the floodwaters have risen so high. While the water levels are beginning to recede, the flooding has already lasted for over a week. Taking in the scene, I began this sketch on my bike. Hopefully in a couple of weeks everything will return to normal.

Old tree in Lac Leamy Park / Un vieil arbre au parc Lac Leamy

On a recent walk to Lac Leamy Park, I stopped by an old tree at the side of a pathway. At this time of year, I couldn't tell if it was an oak or maple tree but it certainly looked well over 100 years old. And not too healthy. However, it'll probably stand there for decades more unless it becomes a hazard to pedestrians or cyclists. I was impressed by its thick bark, unusual bumps and large limbs. A good subject for a painting.

Edge of the forest / L'orée du bois

This painting is complementary to another painting that I just made, Creek in Lac Leamy Park; I created the two paintings in gouache from reference photos that I took while hiking inside the forest and I used the same style and colour palette for each. Since they were small pieces, I was able to quickly paint them while I had the inspiration. We're very fortunate to have several forested parks in the Ottawa-Gatineau region that are either inside the urban centre or close to it - for example: Mud Lake, Petrie Island, Vincent Massey/Hogsback Park, Mer Bleu and, of course, the immense Gatineau Park.

Gouache painting in a Fabriano watercolour sketchbook, 24 x 18 cm (9.5 x 7 inches).

Winter allows me to enter into the deep forested areas of the Lac Leamy Park in Gatineau (Quebec) along trails that have been made by deer and other two-footed explorers. I would never have this chance in the warmer seasons because I would be either eaten by insects or entangled by vines and saplings. Winter has its benefits. The creek that I painted meanders through the forest and empties into the Gatineau River just past the small pedestrian bridge.

Gouache painting in a Fabriano watercolour sketchbook, 18 x 17.5 cm (7 x 6.75 inches).

Wild irises by the water / Iris sauvages au bord de l'eau

One day last year while I was on a bike ride, I noticed a lot of blue wild irises growing on the side of  a bike path in the Lac Leamy Park in Gatineau (Québec). They were mixed up with a lot of weeds but they looked wonderful just the same. I took a few reference photos with the intention of making a painting. Well, it's been a while but I finally finished this painting which will join a series of flowers growing in our region that I've been working on.

Oil painting, 50 x 50 cm (20 x 20 inches).

Peinture à l'huile, 50 x 50 cm (20 x 20 pouces).

Lac Leamy trail near the Pont Noir / Sentier du Lac Leamy près du pont Noir

It was about three weeks ago when we received the first significant snowfall of the season for Ottawa-Gatineau. (Yes, according to the calendar we were still in autumn but practically speaking our seasons operate on a different pattern.) The following day I took a walk to my favourite location in the Lac Leamy Park and enjoyed the beauty of the transformed landscape. From the imprints on the snow I could tell that a lot of other people had the same idea. I took a lot of reference photos and created this scene from one of the photos. A week or so after this snowfall, the weather changed and for the last couple of weeks we've been receiving plenty of warm air which has melted most of this beautiful groundcover giving us a green Christmas! The long range forecast doesn't look very promising for skiers and skaters but winter has just begun and more of its beauty certainly must lie ahead.

Watercolour with ink and gouache in a Fabriano watercolour sketchbook, 27 x 17 cm (10.5 x 6.5 inches).

During a bike trip through Lac Leamy Park in Gatineau, I once encountered a couple of deer quietly making their way through the forest not too far from the bike path. I quickly took a couple of reference photos before they vanished into the thick bush (I already had thoughts that this would make a good composition). Though I returned to this site several times, I never saw the deer there again. I guess this is a good reason for artists to always have a camera handy. Anyway, I took my time in painting this scene as I wanted to capture some of the chaos of the forest floor and magic of these lovely animals.

Oil painting, 40 x 50 cm (16 x 20 inches).

July is one of my favourite months of the year because of all the wildflowers in bloom. While I was biking in the Leamy Lake Park recently, I had to stop and take some pictures of all the flowers growing along the shoreline of the Leamy Lake discharge creek near Highway 50. Although most of them were ordinary wildflowers or weeds, the effect was stunning. It certainly inspired me to paint this small sketch.

Gouache painting in a Fabriano watercolour sketchbook, 25 x 16.5 cm (10 x 6.5 inches).

About a week ago, I took some photographs and painted this scene from a trail in the Lac Leamy Park that winds around the lake. As you can see, winter was still very much present and the snow was thick and abundant for cross-country skiers. In about another week, I expect that this scene will be very different as the daytime temperatures are rising continually and the sun lasts longer each day. With the record amounts of snow and precipitation that we've received this winter, there's a possibility that there will be flooding in this area. But I certainly hope for the best.

Gouache painting in a Fabriano watercolour sketchbook, 25 x 15 cm (10 x 6 inches).

There are several pedestrian bridges in Gatineau's Lac Leamy Park which allow access to sections of the park that would be otherwise blocked. From my observations, these small bridges are used regularly by all sorts of people walking, skiing, cycling and commuting to work. They're a great public asset. My painting is based on a photo that I took at the beginning of winter. From time to time, I walk to this location from my home for exercise and inspiration.

Oil painting, 40 x 50 cm (16 x 20 inches)

Another stream in winter / Un autre ruisseau en hiver

It seems at this time of year, I have a tendency to paint scenes of streams flowing through snowy landscapes. I guess that I could do worse. Having taken a walk yesterday in my favorite local park - Lac Leamy - I took a photo of a small stream meandering through the forest and I painted it today while waiting for the snow plough to clean our street (and leave a heavy snowbank for me to clear). I find it appealing to see water flowing in these frigid scenes because it reminds me that the miracle of spring is only a few weeks away. Let the magic begin!

Gouache painting in a Fabriano watercolour sketchbook, 20.5 x 25.5 cm (8 x 10 inches).

Between the golden glory of autumn and the first blankets of snow of winter, there is a period when the landscape is rather gray. A bit stark but still enjoyable. I recently finished a painting that I began of the Lac Leamy Park during this special 'season'. During one of my regular walks in the park, I took some reference photos of this large tree and some inukshuks that someone had created on the shoreline. (See photos below for a closeup.) Inukshuks are stones which the Inuit arranged one on top of the other to mark a special location. I consider them an artform. They are many locations in Ottawa-Gatineau where you can visit them but this one was a bit of a nice surprise to me which inspired me to make this painting.

Oil painting, 30 x 40 cm (12 x 16 inches).

This is a little experiment that I tried with a limited palette - just blue, black and white. Basically those are the predominant colours that  I saw while taking a walk in Lac Leamy Park recently. The intensity of the blues may be a little exaggerated but that's how it felt to me. While the landscape is enchanting, we're approaching that time of year when we feel that there's been just enough of winter - hence the title, Winter Blues.

Gouache painting in a Fabriano watercolour sketchbook, 18 x 22 cm (7 x 9 inches).

This morning was sunny with a mild chill in the air (-3 C). It was an ideal day for a short walk in my favourite park just across the Gatineau River where I live. A recent snowfall had changed the landscape in Lac Leamy Park from the greys of late autumn to the white-grey-blues of early winter. It was interesting to walk along the bikepath next to the river and watch the chickadees follow me in hope of getting some sunflower seeds. (Not this time, guys.) I saw some landscapers trimming underbrush and a chubby deer watching me carefully in the forest. This was a nice way to start winter.

Gouache painting in a Canson Montval sketchbook, 29 x 20 cm (11 x 8 inches).

While we’re still well in the grip of winter, the growing power of the sun can be felt. Each day the sun seems to shine a little brighter and last a little longer. While there’s still a lot of snow on the ground and snowstorms are yet to be expected, there’s some solace in the knowledge that the strength of the sun will melt this all away within weeks. It’s a hopeful sign of better things to come. (A nice thought during this time of covid and the ugly occupation of downtown Ottawa for nearly a month.) I photographed this scene on my iPhone as I walked in the Lac Leamy Park recently and then painted it at home. On my walks, this is as far as I have gotten this winter but in a couple of months it will be just a short stop from home on my bike rides. (Another nice thought.) The park is a wonderful place in the middle of the city where a lot of people go for exercise and the enjoyment of nature. It’s a great place to have.

Oil painting, 22 x 30 cm (9 x 12 inches).

On one of my regular walking routes, I cross the Gatineau River on the Pont Noir and enter the Lac Leamy Park. Just as I leave the bridge, there's a forested area that I find interesting. While there are a few good sized trees there, most of the forest is filled with scrub bushes or trees that won't develop. I thought that it might make for a good sketching subject, so I took a few reference photos and created this image with pen and ink. Although my sketch looks like a winter scene because of all the white spaces that I left in my sketch, it's actually a late autumn scene.

On another bicycle ride, I stopped near the Ottawa River in the Lac Leamy Park where a shipwreck is found. It always surprises people to see the skeletal remains of a sunken boat in the river. And it also makes a good subject for a sketch. The history of this boat is fairly interesting. It was named the Jean-Richard and was the last wooden ship to be built at Petite-Rivière (Québec) in 1959. The National Film Board even made a short film of its construction which can be viewed here. In 1976 the boat would make its way to Ottawa where it was used for a brief time as a cruise boat and was renamed the Ville de Vanier. It then seems to have been used as a private boat and caught fire in 1987 and was abandoned where it now lies. (An interesting article was written by Andrew King in 2014 and can be read here.) The location of the shipwreck is in an isolated but very attractive area - I think I could have spent a couple of hours here just admiring the landscape and watching the waterfowl on the river.

Ink drawing in a Moleskine sketchbook with Winsor and Newton pens, 17 x 25 cm.

On a bike ride recently, I noticed a group of people exercing in the parking lot of Lac Leamy Park and began a quick sketch of them. It isn't the first time that I've noticed people that were working out there. In the spring and summer, I noticed many groups taking advantage of the outdoors to get in shape - seniors, expectant and new mothers, and families. Since this is Inktober, I thought that it would be appropriate to make this sketch in ink.

This is a digital painting that I made of the Leamy Lake Discharge Creek. I find this urban creek to be rather interesting. You can follow it on bike paths as it starts at a rather dirty source next to Highway 50 and makes its way to the Ottawa River. Along its shoreline there are some very attractive natural settings (like the one I painted), a couple of bridges (one exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists), a shipwreck (the Jean Richard/Ville de Vanier was shipwrecked and left in the creek in 1986 - see article here) and an archeological site (which extends from the creek along the Ottawa River). In the past, I've made a number of sketches of the creek while on my bicycle excursions in this area. I never seem to tire in exploring this area (even in winter).
Digital painting made with an iPad Pro using Procreate.
