Robin in a cherry tree / Rouge-gorge dans un cerisier

In Ottawa-Gatineau, the cherry trees are now in blossom. What a sight! In the weeks to come, the blossoms will magically turn into cherries and be ready for picking by both birds and people. This hungry robin is the the focus of my present painting. Actually, this is a painting that I made a couple of years ago which I have retouched. I didn't like the previous background (too many colours) and so I simplified it to keep the focus on the robin. This is one of the advantages of painters over writers - once a book is written, it's almost impossible to change a character or the plot of the story whereas painters can change the composition, the colour or the focus of a painting (unless it has already been sold). Who knows ... one day I may change it again

À Ottawa-Gatineau, les cerisiers sont maintenant en fleurs. Quelle vue! Dans les semaines à venir, les fleurs se transformeront comme par magie en cerises et seront prêtes à être cueillies par les oiseaux et les humains. Ce rouge-gorge affamé est au centre de ma peinture actuelle. En fait, c'est un tableau que j'ai réalisé il y a quelques années et que j'ai retouché. Je n'aimais pas le fond précédent (trop de couleurs) et je l'ai donc simplifié pour garder l'attention sur le rouge-gorge. C'est l'un des avantages des peintres par rapport aux écrivains : une fois qu'un livre est écrit, il est presque impossible de changer un personnage ou l'intrigue de l'histoire alors que les peintres peuvent changer la composition, la couleur ou l'orientation d'un tableau (sauf si cela a déjà été vendu). Qui sait... peut-être un jour je changerai mon tableau à nouveau.

Chanticleer Garden walkway / La passerelle surélevée du Jardin Chanticleer

After a recent visit this spring to Chanticleer Gardens near Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), I created this ink drawing of my wife as she was walking along an elevated walkway. This was our second visit to this garden which is absolutely enchanting. The skill they demonstrate in growing a wide variety of flowers, shrubs and trees is only equaled to the artistry in which they present them. The garden has numerous sites to explore - like the ruins, the pond, the teacup house and main house, the elevated walkway, the creek and asian woods. You can easily and enjoyably loose yourself there for a day!

Après une récente visite ce printemps aux Jardins Chanticleer près de Philadelphie (Pennsylvanie), j'ai créé ce dessin à l'encre de ma femme alors qu'elle marchait le long d'une passerelle surélevée. C'était notre deuxième visite dans ce jardin absolument enchanteur. L'habileté dont ils font preuve dans la culture d'une grande variété de fleurs, d'arbustes et d'arbres n'a d'égal que le talent artistique avec lequel ils les présentent. Le jardin comporte de nombreux sites à explorer, comme les ruines, l'étang, la maison de thé et la maison principale, la passerelle surélevée, le ruisseau et les bois asiatiques. Vous pourrez facilement et agréablement vous y perdre le temps d'une journée !
