Indigo Inn, Charleston, South Carolina

On my recent road trip south to get some reprieve from winter, my wife and I stopped at several hotels along the way. While all were fine, none however could match the charm and comfort of the Indigo Inn in downtown Charleston (South Carolina). Built in the 1850s as a warehouse for indigo (a plant used as a dye for the colour indigo), it was transformed into a hotel in 1979. Inside the structure (which I have illustrated below), you'll find a lovely open-air courtyard with chairs and tables to have breakfast or just to relax and listen to the fountain dripping into a small pond (which I have illustrated above). A lovely place to stop and explore a unique city.

Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, Charleston, South Carolina

When I travel, I often like to visit botanical gardens. Besides the beauty of these places, they also tell you something about the history of the area. On a recent trip to Charleston (South Carolina), my wife and I spent some time at the Magnolia Plantation and Gardens - one of the oldest public gardens in the USA. The plantation encompasses a large piece of land which has been in the same family's hands for 300 years. There are many ponds and swamps to explore with incredibly beautify trees on the shoreline - like the live oaks with Spanish moss hanging from their limbs - and with interesting birds and reptiles - like the turtles and alligators (which seem to live in harmony). Statutes and benches are found throughout the plantation as well as bridges like the one I sketched.
