Black Sheep concert / Concert au Mouton noir

It's extremely rare that I'll spend time in a bar, but recently when I found out that singer-songwriter Ian Tamblyn was performing at the Black Sheep in Wakefield (Québec) I made an exception. Ian Tamblyn has recorded over 30 albums in his career beginning in 1976. While I certainly haven't heard all of them, I'm impressed by the quiet songs in one of his albums, Walking in the Footsteps - Celebrating the Group of Seven. At the Black Sheep, he played his songs in a folk-rock fashion to a small but dedicated and enthusiatic crowd. I discretely took a couple of photos at the concert and created this ink drawing afterwards. I liked the ambiance of the Black Sheep. It reminded me a little of Le Hibou (not the restaurant next door but the legendary coffee house on Sussex Street in Ottawa that had concerts by the like of Joni Mitchell, Bruce Cockburn, Kris Kristofferson, Neil Young, Muddy Waters and more).  I liked the intimate ambiance in the room. It's a big difference from listening to singers in large concert halls even if you can manage to get a seat up front.

Gatineau River at Wakefield in winter / La rivière Gatineau à Wakefield en hiver

Here's another sketch of the Gatineau River next to the covered bridge in Wakefield. At this time of year, the river is beginning to run faster as the snow is melting in the river's basin. In a couple of weeks, the river will begin rising to its maximum levels. When I first began painting this image, I used transparent watercolours but switched to opaque gouache paint when I encountered some problems with the colour of the sky. Although gouache paint is very similar to watercolours, it allows you to paint over areas much like oil and acrylic paints.

After I made a sketch of the Wakefield covered bridge in November of last year, I thought that it would be great fun to create another painting of it but this time set in winter. Time passed. Eventually, I began to worry that winter may end early before I could take reference photos. (In hindsight, this was a foolishly over-optimistic thought). So one fine day, my wife and I drove to Wakefield for lunch at the Le Hibou Restaurant and snapped some reference photos. With this done, I began to paint my image. I took a few liberties with my rendition - a light fixture on the right-hand side of the bridge was missing (due to vandalism?) but I decided to include one; and above the entrance there was a sign about parking which I found distracting, so I deleted it as well as electrical wires. That's artistic license, I guess.

Oil painting, 40.5 x 30.5 cm (16 x 12 inches).

The Wakefield Covered Bridge in November / Le pont couvert de Wakefield en novembre

November isn't often known as a great photo-taking month in Ottawa-Gatineau. Just the same, on my way to our cottage recently, I took a slight detour and stopped to photograph the Wakefield covered bridge which spans the Gatineau River. It's a lovely site and the 90 m covered bridge is impressive. The bridge was initially built in 1915 but was destroyed by fire in 1984. The local residents collected money to rebuild it and the new structure opened in 1997. (There is an exceptionally detailed and interesting article in the Gatineau Valley Historical Society's magazine, Up the Gatineau! vol 23 here.) I took some reference photos of the bridge and created this watercolour painting a few days later. I've made a mental note to myself to return here and create another sketch when the weather is nicer.

Up the Gatineau! vol 23 ici.)

Wakefield Mill Hotel and Spa / Le Moulin Wakefield Hôtel et Spa

Just next to the La Pêche River falls in Wakefield (Quebec), you'll find the beautiful Wakefield Mill Hotel and Spa. It's a well-kept establishment having initially been built as a flour mill in 1838. In 2000, the old mill was painstakingly renovated into a modern hotel while keeping many of its historic elements. The hotel fits in seamlessly with the natural beauty of the falls and forest. While creating this painting from a photo that I took at the site, I found myself incorporating all sorts of details into this relatively small image.

La Pêche River at Wakefield / La rivière La Pêche à Wakefield

I recently created a watercolour painting of the Maclaren House in Wakefield, Québec. As I mentioned when I published it, the immediate surroundings of that area are truly inspiring. This image is of a small bridge crossing the La Pêche River on the road leading to the Maclaren House. While I was there, the rapids weren't too wild but still very impressive. I can imagine the spectacular view during the spring runoff. Then again, the view would be inspiring whatever season or time you choose.

Maclaren House in September / La maison Maclaren en septembre

The Maclaren House which sits on a hill next to the LaPeche River in Wakefield, Québec, is a beautiful and historic site. The house was built in between 1861 and 1871 by John Maclaren, a local businessman. I've visited this site several times over the years and have previously made a painting of it in the depths of winter when icicles formed down along its roof (click here for painting). This time I wanted to capture the full extent of the Victorian building with its porch and front door. But the beauty of the entire location is enchanting with a broad lawn in front and a sky that reaches out.

From different perspectives, the snowbanks at this time of year can look very impressive. Of course things aren't as bad as they appear in this sketch ... but they sure feel like it! This is a Victorian era house found in Wakefield, Quebec, known as the McLaren House. Its a very attractive old house and has been well-maintained. One of the treasures of the Outaouais region.

On the road to our lake, we often cross the Gatineau River at Wakefield, Quebec. The view of the 'old' covered bridge is inspiring. (The real old bridge - built in 1915 - was burnt in 1984 and a replacement was constructed because everyone liked it so much.) This is a quick sketch that I painted this evening from a photo we took in January. Of course, I'd much rather paint en plein air but photography makes it so much easier to create paintings ... no cold weather to freeze your fingers and other parts of the anatomy.
Watercolour, 11 x 7.5 inches (28 x 19 cm).
