In the north when when winter's claw
Relaxes now to keep the laws of nature in control
People come and stand in line
To rob the forest of her wine
But they don't feel the cold
Love and Maple Syrup

Doodles / Les gribouillages

Some people pass their time doing crosswords, sudoko puzzles, reading, watching tv, or surfing the web. From time to time, I fill up my idle time with doodling. It doesn't take much concentration, and you can pick it up or leave it aside in a minute. Its a kind of outlet for periods when you are between projects.

In September 1889, while Vincent Van Gogh was in a sanatorium overlooking the village of Saint-Rémy near Arles he painted from memory a 29 x 36 inch composition that he called Starry Night. Later he would also create a sketch with a reed pen of the same scene. He commented in his letters to his brother, Theo: “This morning I saw the country from my window a long time before sunrise, with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big.” Later in his correspondence he seemed to express some dissatisfaction with his final composition, commenting “because it lacks individual intention and feeling in the lines. Where these lines are close and deliberate it begins to be a picture, even if it is exaggerated.” In my imagination, I see Vincent in the fields at night composing his painting with a few candles to help him in his work. The night sky, the scents of late summer and the rich colours are his inspiration.

The fox and the crow / Le renard et le corbeau

This is an illustration of the Aesop fable about the fox and the crow. You know - the fox was hungry and wanted to eat the grapes that the crow held in its beak, so he told it that it sang sweeter than any of the other birds in the forest. The flattery was too much for the silly crow and it began to sing, dropping the grapes for the fox to savour. Unfortunately, I don't think that this is exactly how Aesop told it. I believe that Aesop had the bird hold a piece of cheese in its beak. But who knows ... that was 2,600 years ago, and anyway who heard of foxes eating cheese!  ;-)

The Hobbit

With the announcement that Peter Jackson will be directing Tolkien's The Hobbit, I've begun re-reading that novel like thousands and thousands of people around the world. There are many memorable scenes in the novel, but one that captured my imagination was from a chapter entitled "Flies and Spiders". The sketch that I made was when Bilbo begins to fall asleep and large spiders make their way towards him with evil intent. I won't say any more.
