Tuscany landscape / Paysage de Toscane

The gentle rolling hills of Tuscany make a perfect subject for landscape sketching. I made this sketch from a photo that I took in the Monteriggioni region this autumn.

The Boboli Gardens / Les jardins Boboli

The Boboli Gardens in Florence (Italy) is mostly composed of topiary (sculpted) trees and shrubs, statutes and fountains, and trees aligned in linear or geometric shapes. This vast 111 acre garden is organized into sections with different themes or attractions - for example there's the Cypress Lane, the Amphitheatre, the Island Pond, and the Fountain of the Mostaccini. It's a unique pleasure to quietly explore all these different areas and to discover special plants, birds, ornaments, and curios. My sketch is of something I stumbled upon on my wanderings - a scene right out of Arthur Rackham's imagination with trees looking like characters out of a fairy tale. Even though it was mid-day, it was an eerie walk down this enchanted path.

Fountain of the Mostaccini / La Fontaine du Mostaccini

Florence (Italy) has a lot of interesting sites to see but one of the attractions that caught my fancy was the large 16th Century Boboli Garden with its grand design, fountains and statutes galore. The grounds are immense and the topography is varied - meaning that you have to walk up and down a high hill in the centre of the Garden; but the views over Florence are certainly breath-taking and well-worth the climb. The sketch I included in this post is of the Fountain of the Mostaccini. As the guidebook explains: '(the fountain is) formed by a long cascading chain of water gushing from sixteen large, monstrous masks (called Mostaccini, perhaps in reference to the moustaches) and terminating below in another water chain devoid of any decoration. The fountain was most likely built between 1619 and 1621 by Romolo Ferrucci del Tadda, author of other animal sculptures found in the gardens.' It was the first time I ever saw something like this and was very impressed.

Manarola

Like most villages in Cinque Terre, Manarola has a picturesque collection of old colourful buildings, sloping down to the sea. What first struck me as I entered the village, were the lovely terraced hillside gardens and the way that the village fit into the landscape. It seemed that even the streams which came down from the mountains were given a prominent place in the local community.

The Cinque Terre (Five Lands) in the northeasten Liguria region of Italy presents a spectacular landscape of rock, terraced gardens, and incredibly coloured seas. Everything seems to be built in the vertical: villages cling to shoreline mountains; and gardens with grapevines and other vegetables are grown on high terraces. A hiking trail links the five villages together but most tourists use the train which runs from village to village through tunnels and over bridges. When weather permits, the tour boats are also a fantastic way of appreciating the landscape.

The View from the Bridge of Sighs / La Vue du Pont des Soupirs

The Bridge of Sighs in Venice is an enclosed passageway of white limestone where prisoners were taken from the court of the Doge's Palace to the dungeons on the other side of the canal (named the Rio de Palazzo o de Canonica). The view from the bridge by convicts was the last sight of Venice that they would ever see - hence the name, Bridge of Sighs. There are many famous paintings of the Bridge (see below) but my sketch is the view from the Bridge looking down at the canal. As I took a tour of the Palace, I snapped a quick photo from the stone grill covering the window and then composed this sketch.

There's nothing more unique to Venice than its gondolas. These sleek craft have been plying the waters of the Grand Canal and smaller canals for centuries and now are used primarily for the amusement of visitors to the island. However, there's also a more utilitarian use for the gondola; in certain areas of the Grand Canal where there are no bridges, special gondolas (known as a traghetto) are used to shuttle pedestrians from one shore to the other. These gondolas are normally rowed by two men, and the passengers stand inside them because the chairs are removed. They may not be as romantic, but if you only want to experience the sensation of a gondola ride it will cost you roughly one Euro instead of over 40 Euros for a 40 minute ride. This sketch is of a traghetto station with two businessmen waiting for their ride.

The Three Bridges in Venice / Les Trois Ponts à Venise

Venice has always been a great place for an artist. It's such a unique city filled with canals and bridges, small squares, narrow passageways, sculptures high on walls, and scenes that beckon you to paint. Getting lost on its streets inevitably leads you to a great restaurant or a quiet café. This sketch is of an area known as the Fondamenta Tre Ponti (the Three Bridges). I took a half hour to draw this scene while boats of every description zipped by, and pedestrians made their way across the bridges and passageways around me. Unbeknownst to me, one of them announced that my sketch was 'bellisimo' - making me feel like a John Singer Sargeant for a brief moment!

Castel dell'Ovo, Naples

The Castel dell'Ovo (Egg Castle) is the oldest fortification in Naples, with a history dating back to the first century BC. It has a commanding view of the Bay of Naples and, fortunately for me, it was located just outside my hotel window. So I was able to take my time and slowly sketch this gigantic castle. I also managed to visit inside this fortification and was impressed with the views atop its parapet. The island that the castel was built on, now has plenty of interesting restaurants and a busy marina.

The Bay of Naples / La baie de Naples

The Bay of Naples was a stunning place to visit after the urban landscape of Rome. The location and size of the bay was very impressive as well as all of the activity that went on. From our vantage point, we could see from a distance a cloud-topped Mount Vesuvius, the Isle of Capri and the hills surrounding the city. It was fascinating just to sit and watch the sky - in one part of the bay, it might be raining; whereas in another it was brilliant sunshine.

Stone pine trees in Rome / Les pins parasols à Rome

Rome certainly has a lot of interesting sites to visit. Although its hard to list them all, I think that the Pantheon, the Piazza Navona, the Vatican and Ancient Rome would be on the top of my list. The landscape of Rome also made an impression on me; particularly the stone pine trees that could be seen around the city. This scene is of a few of those trees along the Via del Fori Imperiali with the Santa Luca e Martina Church in the background.

Fountain at the Barberini Palace / Fontaine de la palais Barberini

This is a sketch of the fountain in front of the Barberini Palace in Rome which I created during a recent visit to Italy. The palace was located near my hotel and so I found it convenient to sketch during some idle time before supper. Its courtyard was a nice calm location away from the busy streets nearby. While I was there looking for a scene to draw at the palace, I walked up an interior staircase to find a lovely garden. However, my attention was continually drawn to this lovely fountain.
