Fountain of the Mostaccini / La Fontaine du Mostaccini

Florence (Italy) has a lot of interesting sites to see but one of the attractions that caught my fancy was the large 16th Century Boboli Garden with its grand design, fountains and statutes galore. The grounds are immense and the topography is varied - meaning that you have to walk up and down a high hill in the centre of the Garden; but the views over Florence are certainly breath-taking and well-worth the climb. The sketch I included in this post is of the Fountain of the Mostaccini. As the guidebook explains: '(the fountain is) formed by a long cascading chain of water gushing from sixteen large, monstrous masks (called Mostaccini, perhaps in reference to the moustaches) and terminating below in another water chain devoid of any decoration. The fountain was most likely built between 1619 and 1621 by Romolo Ferrucci del Tadda, author of other animal sculptures found in the gardens.' It was the first time I ever saw something like this and was very impressed.

Les motifs sont immenses et la topographie est variée - ce qui signifie que vous devez monter et descendre une colline dans le centre du jardin; mais les points de vue sur Florence sont certainement à couper le souffle et bien vaut la montée. Le croquis que j'ai inclus dans ce post est de la fontaine de la Mostaccini. Comme le guide officiel explique: '(la fontaine est) formé par une chaîne d'eau en cascade de seize grands masques monstrueux (appelés Mostaccini, peut-être en référence aux moustaches) et se terminant ci-dessous dans une autre chaîne de l'eau dépourvue de toute décoration. La fontaine a été probablement construite entre 1619 et 1621 par Romolo Ferrucci del Tadda, auteur d'autres sculptures d'animaux trouvés dans les jardins.' C'était la première fois que je voyais quelque chose comme cela et j'étais très impressionné.
