Snowy owl flying by Parliament building / Harfang des neiges volant près de l'édifice du Parlement

 

Snowy owls are large nocturnal birds seen on fairly rare occasions which gives them a certain magical quality. It’s no wonder that they’re often used as creatures of fantasy in literature and paintings. I imagined this scene while playing with one of my pen-and-ink sketches on my iPad. I scanned my paper drawing when I was at a crossroad on how I would carry on. I thought that maybe I could come up with more ideas on my iPad before I put more ink on paper. I then worked out some ideas digitally and came up with the notion of a snowy owl in flight and began to colour and resize a revised image on my iPad. That’s the power of digital painting – everything is flexible without limitation. In contrast, it would have been virtually impossible for me to add the owl to my paper sketch without starting from scratch. Anyway, I think that the snowy owl fits in nicely with the gothic architecture of the Parliament buildings ... and maybe some winter evening I might actually see one while strolling there.

Les harfangs des neiges sont de grands oiseaux nocturnes que l'on rencontre assez rarement ce qui leur confère un certain côté magique. Il n'est pas étonnant qu'ils soient souvent utilisés comme créatures fantastiques dans la littérature et les peintures. J'ai imaginé cette scène en jouant avec l'un de mes croquis à la plume sur mon iPad. J'ai scanné mon dessin sur papier quand j'étais à la croisée des chemins sur la façon dont je continuerais. J'ai pensé que je pourrais peut-être trouver plus d'idées sur mon iPad avant de mettre plus d'encre sur le papier. J'ai ensuite élaboré quelques idées numériquement et j'ai eu la notion d'un harfang des neiges en vol et j'ai commencé à colorier et à redimensionner une image révisée sur mon iPad. C'est une exemple de la puissance de la peinture numérique - tout est flexible sans limite. En revanche, il m'aurait été pratiquement impossible d'ajouter la chouette à mon croquis papier sans repartir de zéro. Quoi qu'il en soit, je pense que le harfang des neiges s'intègre bien dans l'architecture gothique des édifices du Parlement ... et peut-être qu'un soir d'hiver, je pourrais en voir un en me promenant là-bas.
