In 1995, I made this sketch of a tree in a field. I believe it was inspired by the massive trees found along the Rideau River in Overbrook or Vanier where I often walked as a kid. Today parklands stretch all along the eastern shore of the Rideau River from the majestic falls which flow into the Ottawa River to Mooney's Bay, some 12.5 km in distance. To provide access to these parklands, in the 1970s paths were built along the shoreline. Cyclists and pedestrians were then able to enjoy and to explore the many interesting locations next to the river - rapids, bird sanctuaries, small islands, rocky outcropings, meadows and forested areas. It's great to contemplate this bucolic scenery right in the heart of the city.

En 1995, j'ai réalisé ce croquis d'un arbre dans un champ. Je crois qu'il s'inspirait des arbres majestueux qui bordaient la rivière Rideau à Overbrook et Vanier, où je me promenais souvent quand j'étais jeune. Aujourd'hui, des parcs s'étendent sur toute la rive est de la rivière Rideau, des chutes majestueuses qui se jettent dans la rivière des Outaouais jusqu'à la baie Mooney, soit une distance d'environ 12,5 km. Afin de faciliter l'accès à ces parcs, des sentiers ont été aménagés le long du rivage dans les années 1970. Cyclistes et piétons pouvaient alors profiter des nombreux sites intéressants qui bordent la rivière et les explorer : rapides, réserves ornithologiques, îlots, affleurements rocheux, prairies et zones boisées. Quel plaisir de contempler ce paysage bucolique en plein cœur de la ville !
