Chickadee on a post / Mésange sur un poteau

While  walking through different parks lately, I seem to notice that the chickadees are particularly active. As soon as you step into their territory, they swoop down around you expecting some food. I suspect that they're getting ready for the colder weather and are desperate especially for sunflower seeds. This is a sketch I made of a chickadee collecting seeds from a post. I made it on my iPad Pro based on a photo that I took.

En me promenant dans différents parcs ces derniers temps, il me semble que les mésanges sont particulièrement actives. Dès que vous entrez sur leur territoire, ils s’enfoncent autour de vous et attendent de la nourriture. Je soupçonne qu'ils se préparent au froid et qu'ils sont désespérés, en particulier pour les graines de tournesol. Voici un croquis que j'ai fait d'une mésange ramassant des graines d'un poteau. Je l'ai fait sur mon iPad Pro à partir d'une photo que j'ai prise.

Deer in early winter / Cerf en début d'hiver

Lately the weather has almost returned to normal in Ottawa-Gatineau. It's such a relief after the terrible cold we've had, and so I've taken the opportunity to take long walks along the bike paths leading into the Leamy Lake Park. I follow a portion of the same route that I take in warmer weather with my bike. The park is very quiet at this time of the year. And it looks very different without leaves on the trees and a thin layer of snow on the ground. I've encountered few people during my visits but did meet a solitary deer one morning. It was fairly close to me but didn't seem at all alarmed as it foraged for something to eat. From a snapshot I took, I created this quick sketch on my iPad.

Dernièrement, le temps est presque revenu à la normale à Ottawa-Gatineau. C’est un tel soulagement après le froid glacial que nous avons eu, et j’en ai donc profité pour faire de longues promenades le long des pistes cyclables menant au parc du lac Leamy. Je marche sur une portion du même sentir que je prends par temps chaud avec mon vélo. Le parc est très calme à cette époque de l'année. Et il a l'air très différent sans feuilles sur les arbres et une fine couche de neige sur le sol. J'ai rencontré peu de gens lors de mes visites mais j'ai rencontré un cerf solitaire un matin. Il était assez proche de moi mais ne semblait pas du tout alarmé car il cherchait quelque chose à manger. À partir d'un instantané que j'ai pris, j'ai créé cette esquisse rapide sur mon iPad.

Egret in flight / Aigrette en vol

This summer we spied, for the first time, an egret at our lake north of Ottawa-Gatineau. It was surprising to see this large ghostly bird on the shoreline of the lake and in flight over the water. In shape, it resembled the great blue herons that regularly nest here but its bright white colour certainly makes it stand out.
Although this image may look like an oil painting, I actually made it one evening on my iPad Pro using Procreate. Back in the summer, I'd been thinking of creating a watercolour painting of this scene but didn't get around to it. Picking up my tablet at the end of the day, I began to rough out the scene and before you knew it, it was finished! This is one of the things that I like about digital painting - you can accomplish something worthwhile in little time without having to spend a lot of time setting up and cleaning up afterwards. On the other hand, you can also spend dozens of hours slowly working out the small details of an image but in small chunks of time that become available while waiting in the dentist's office or at the garage, for instance. Anyway, its great fun to have another tool to create some art.

Cet été, nous avons aperçu pour la première fois une aigrette au bord de notre lac, au nord d’Ottawa-Gatineau. C'était surprenant de voir ce grand oiseau fantomatique sur le rivage du lac et en vol au-dessus de l'eau. Sa forme ressemblait aux grands hérons bleus qui y nichent régulièrement, mais sa couleur blanche brillante le distingue certainement des autres.
Bien que cette image ressemble à une peinture à l'huile, je l'ai réalisée un soir sur mon iPad Pro avec Procreate. En été, je pensais créer une aquarelle de cette scène, mais je n'y suis pas parvenu. En reprenant ma tablette à la fin d'une journée, j'ai commencé à dessiner la scène et dans peu de temps, c'était fini! C’est l’une des choses que j’aime dans la peinture numérique: vous pouvez réaliser quelque chose de valable en peu de temps sans avoir à passer beaucoup de temps de s'installer et à nettoyer par la suite. D'autre part, vous pouvez également passer des dizaines d'heures à régler lentement les petits détails d'une image, mais par petits morceaux de temps qui deviennent disponibles en attendant par exemple chez le dentiste ou le garage. Quoi qu'il en soit, c'est très amusant d'avoir un autre outil pour créer de l'art.

Lac Leamy Park pavilion / Pavillon du parc du Lac Leamy

I began this sketch while I was taking a bike ride in the Lac Leamy Park (Gatineau, QC) at the end of October. The weather was good for that time of year, somewhere around 10C with sunny skies. However, I knew that it was probably the last ride of the year since the forecast was for colder and wetter weather ahead. Over the years, I've sketched this park from all sorts of viewpoints in different seasons. It's forever changing and there's always something interesting to see - like the pair of deer I noticed foraging inside a forested area. I look forward to cycling here again next year ... and maybe I can even do some cross-country skiing here this winter.

J'ai commencé ce dessin quand je faisais une randonnée à vélo dans le parc du lac Leamy (Gatineau, QC) à la fin du mois d'octobre. La météo était clémente pour cette période de l’année, autour de 10C avec un ciel ensoleillé. Cependant, je savais que c’était probablement ma dernière randonnée de l’année puisque les prévisions météorologiques annoncaient les temps plus froids avec la pluie. Au fil des ans, j'ai dessiné ce parc à partir de divers points de vue et de différentes saisons. Le parc change constamment et il y a toujours quelque chose d'intéressant à voir - comme les chevreuilles que j'ai remarqué en train de fouiller dans une zone forestière. J'ai hâte de revenir à vélo ici l'année prochaine ... et peut-être que je pourrais même faire du ski de fond ici cet hiver.

Zion Canyon

It was a breath-taking visit to the Zion Canyon in Utah. The scale of the canyons in this part of the United States is incredible. Here, the rock cliffs soar into the sky and the landscape is continually in motion - the colours of the stratified rock change, the vegetation alters from dry to verdant, and the altitude seems to climb from site to site (from 3,600 to 8.700 feet). This is a small sketch I started at the Visitor Center in the Zion National Park.

Ce fut une visite à couper le souffle dans le canyon de Zion dans l'Utah. L'ampleur des canyons dans cette partie des États-Unis est incroyable. Ici, les falaises rocheuses s’élèvent dans le ciel et le paysage est continuellement en mouvement - les couleurs des roches stratifiées changent, la végétation change de sèche à verdoyante et l’altitude semble monter d’un site à l’autre (de 3 600 à 8 700 pieds). Voici un petit croquis que j'ai commencé au centre d'accueil dans le parc national de Zion.
