Tugboat at Gatineau Point / Remorqueur à la Pointe Gatineau

The Ottawa River is starting to come back to life after what seemed like a very long winter. Boats are now starting to slowly appear on the water and docks are being placed in their regular locations. Of course, it all takes time and the cooperation of the weather. A few days ago while I was cycling in Gatineau Point, I spied this tugboat and thought that it would make a good subject for a sketch with Rockliffe Park in the background. As I mentioned in a previous posting, tugboats such as this one were the work-horses of the river. Gigantic floats of logs were assembled by them and pulled downriver to mills (see photo below). Its rewarding to see one of these boats still in operation.

La rivière des Outaouais commence à revenir à la vie après ce qui semblait être un très long hiver. Les bateaux commencent à apparaître lentement sur l'eau et les quais sont placés à leurs emplacements habituels. Bien sûr, tout cela prend du temps et la coopération de la météo. Il y a quelques jours, alors que je faisais du vélo à la Pointe Gatineau, j'ai aperçu ce remorqueur et j'ai pensé que cela ferait un bon sujet pour un croquis avec le parc Rockliffe à l'arrière-plan. Comme je l'ai mentionné dans un article précédent, les remorqueurs comme celui-ci étaient les chevaux de travail de la rivière. Des gigantesques billes de bois ont été assemblés par eux et tirés en aval vers les moulins (voir photo ci-dessous). C'est gratifiant de voir l'un de ces bateaux encore en opération.
