The City of Gatineau and the National Capital Commission have invested a lot of money and effort in renovating the shoreline along the Ottawa River in the Gatineau Point sector. They began planning the redevelopment back in 2006 and completed most of the work last year. The redevelopment consisted of reinforcing the shoreline, creating a new parkway for cars, and building a recreational pathway which is tastefully landscaped with gardens, lookouts, and quays. The results are spectacular. Of course, like any major project, there was a lot of controversy surrounding the elimination of private docks and the new vision for the sector. Last week, on a bike ride on the pathway, I stopped to sketch one of the new quays (called Quay of Legends) which has a rather unique look - something like a uncompleted bridge (of which local politicians on both sides of the river seem to excel: our last bridge was built over fifty years ago when the communities had less than half the residents of today). My sketch includes a part of Rockliffe Park and the skyline of Ottawa-Gatineau.

La Ville de Gatineau et la Commission de la capitale nationale ont investi beaucoup d'argent et d'efforts dans la rénovation du littoral le long de la rivière des Outaouais dans le secteur de la Pointe Gatineau. Ils ont commencé à planifier le réaménagement en 2006 et ont terminé la plus grande partie du travail l'année dernière. Le réaménagement a consisté à renforcer le rivage, à créer une nouvelle promenade pour les voitures et à construire un sentier récréatif aménagé avec goût avec des jardins, des belvédères et des quais. Les résultats sont spectaculaires. Bien sûr, comme tout projet majeur, il y a eu beaucoup de controverse entourant l'élimination des quais privés et la nouvelle vision du secteur. La semaine dernière, lors d'une balade à vélo sur le sentier, je me suis arrêté pour dessiner l'un des nouveaux quais (appelé Quai-des-Légendes) qui ressemble à un pont inachevé (dont les politiciens locaux des deux côtés de la rivière semblent exceller: notre dernier pont a été construit il y a plus de cinquante ans quand les communautés comptaient moins de la moitié des résidents d'aujourd'hui). Mon croquis comprend une partie du parc Rockliffe et l'horizon d'Ottawa-Gatineau.
