Alexandra Bridge / Le pont Alexandra

In a year or two, the Alexandra Bridge in Ottawa-Gatineau will be demolished. The plan is to replace the old steel truss bridge with a modern structure within ten years. Officially opened in 1901 by the future King George V, the Alexandra Bridge (named after his mother, Queen Alexandra) initially served as a train bridge with a lane set aside for pedestrians; 60 years ago the trains stopped running and ever since the bridge has been used for vehicles and pedestrians. I'm fond of the old bridge. As a kid, I remember my fright while driving over it in a car because the car would sway and make a whiny noise as it made its way over a lane made in metal. Later in life, I used to pass under it in my sailboat, marvelling at its complexity and strength. Still much later when I was retired, I'd leisurely cycle and sketch on it. I'll certainly miss it when its gone.

I made this painting for an exhibition that Artawa is holding from November 2026 to January 2027 celebrating the bicentennial of the city of Ottawa. My painting is based on a small sketch that I made in 2018 while cycling near the bridge.

Oil painting 30 x 30 cm (12 x 12 inches).

Peinture à l'huile, 30 x 30 cm (12 x 12 pouces).
