Yesterday marked the twentieth anniversary of my website, Michael's Scroll. Hip hip horrah!!! I'm amazed that it's existed for so long given the ever-changing landscape of the internet. My website (or blog) is a journal of the artwork that I create: mostly ink drawings, watercolours, and oil paintings.
I decided to call my blog a 'Scroll'. In the past, the term referred to the long rolls of paper or papyrus used in ancient manuscripts, some illustrated or illuminated. Today, however, the term is primarily used to describe how we move - scroll - down web pages. I thought that this made an interesting comparison. A scroll is also something that parliamentary clerks write on to record the business of an assembly. Having once been a clerk, I thought that it was appropriate to call my collection of sketches and paintings, 'Michael's Scroll': my own record of art rolling down a web page!
Although I began Michael's Scroll in 2006, I've been drawing and painting ever since I was a kid. While I've incorporated some of my earilier creations in this blog, it's now mostly composed of my current projects which has made my blog increasingly into a chronicle of my art and my life. I try to accompany my drawings and paintings with a short narrative describing technical aspects, historical background, whimsy or personal notes. I do this in both English and French because this reflects the community of Ottawa-Gatineau where I grew up and still live.
According to statistics, I have 'posted' over 812 times on this blog with roughly 92 oil paintings, 491 watercolours, 159 ink drawings, and 32 digital images. I've had 222,687 visits to my blog but admittedly haven't received many comments. (I get more comments on my FaceBook and Flickr accounts where I also post some artwork.) While I appreciate comments a great deal, this is not the driving force for publishing my artwork on Michael's Scroll. Nor are sales - I'm an amateur who's not doing this for compensation. You can say that my blog acts as an art gallery for me. I don't have enough space on my walls at home to display all my creations, so a blog gives me a chance to exhibit and share my creations with as many people as possible.
Twenty years is a long time to run a virtual art gallery. I hope to continue my art blog for many more years if the internet, creativity and good health permits.

Hier, mon site web, Michael's Scroll, a fêté ses vingt ans ! Hourra ! Je suis étonné qu'il existe depuis si longtemps, vu l'évolution constante d'Internet. Mon site (ou blog) est un journal de mes créations artistiques : principalement des dessins à l'encre, des aquarelles et des peintures à l'huile.
J'ai choisi d'appeler mon blog un « Scroll » (Plumitif, en francais). Autrefois, ce terme en anglais désignait les longs rouleaux de papier ou de papyrus utilisés dans les manuscrits anciens, parfois illustrés ou enluminés. Aujourd'hui, cependant, il est surtout employé pour décrire la façon dont on fait défiler les pages web. Je trouvais la comparaison intéressante. Un « Scroll » est aussi un document sur lequel les greffiers parlementaires consignaient les délibérations d'une assemblée. Ayant moi-même été greffier, il m'a semblé approprié d'appeler ma collection de croquis et de peintures « Michael's Scroll » : mon propre témoignage artistique défilant sur une page web !
Bien que j'aie lancé Michael's Scroll en 2006, je dessine et peins depuis l'enfance. Si j'ai intégré certaines de mes premières créations à ce blogue, il est maintenant principalement composé de mes projets actuels, ce qui en fait de plus en plus une chronique de mon art et de ma vie. J'essaie d'accompagner mes dessins et peintures d'un court récit décrivant les aspects techniques, le contexte historique, une touche de fantaisie ou des notes personnelles. Je le fais en anglais et en français, car cela reflète la communauté d'Ottawa-Gatineau où j'ai grandi et où je vis toujours.
D'après les statistiques, j'ai publié plus de 812 articles sur ce blog, présentant environ 92 peintures à l'huile, 491 aquarelles, 159 dessins à l'encre et 32 images numériques. Mon blog a enregistré 222.687 visites, mais je dois avouer que je n'ai pas reçu beaucoup de commentaires. (J'en reçois davantage sur mes comptes Facebook et Flickr, où je publie également certaines de mes œuvres.) Bien que j'apprécie beaucoup les commentaires, ce n'est pas la principale raison pour laquelle je publie mes œuvres sur Michael's Scroll. Les ventes ne sont pas non plus ma motivation : je suis un amateur et je ne fais pas cela pour être rémunéré. On pourrait dire que mon blog me sert de galerie d'art. Je n'ai pas de la place d'exposer toutes mes créations chez moi, alors un blog me permet de les présenter et de les partager avec le plus grand nombre.
Vingt ans, c'est long pour gérer une galerie d'art virtuelle. J'espère continuer mon blog artistique pendant encore de nombreuses années, si internet, l'inspiration et une bonne santé me le permettent.
