Last summer, I spent an afternoon at Patterson Creek next to the Rideau Canal in Ottawa. My wife and I had lunch at the newly installed Bistro (of which I posted an ink sketch previously - see below) and then we walked around the lovely watershed and marveled at the beautiful willows and maples. At the time, I intended to make a painting of the site from reference photos that I took, however it's taken me more time than I anticipated. But what's the rush, eh? As you may know, I've painted this area several times over the years in different seasons (see some paintings below). I'm attracted to this section of the Rideau Canal which I've enjoyed throughout my life as a kid with my parents, as a teenager with my wife (as my girlfriend), as a parent with my kids, and now in senior years with my wife again. I think it's rather special to have a sort of bond with a particular area over a lifetime. I'll certainly have to paint it at least one more time again.

L'été dernier, j'ai passé un après-midi à la ruisseau Patterson, près du canal Rideau, à Ottawa. Ma femme et moi avons déjeuné au Bistro nouvellement installé (dont j'ai déjà posté un croquis à l'encre - voir ci-dessous), puis nous nous sommes promenés autour du joli bassin versant et nous sommes émerveillés devant les magnifiques saules et érables. À l'époque, j'avais l'intention de réaliser une peinture du site à partir de photos de référence que j'avais prises, mais cela m'a pris plus de temps que prévu. Mais pourquoi se pressé, hein ? Comme vous le savez peut-être, j'ai peint cette zone plusieurs fois au fil des ans et à différentes saisons (voir quelques peintures ci-dessous). Je suis attiré par cette section du canal Rideau que j'ai appréciée tout au long de ma vie en tant qu'enfant avec mes parents, en tant qu'adolescent avec ma femme (en tant que petite amie), en tant que parent avec mes enfants et maintenant à nouveau avec ma femme. Je pense que c'est assez particulier d'avoir une sorte de lien avec un domaine particulier tout au long de sa vie. Je devrai certainement le repeindre au moins une fois de plus.
