Archaeological volunteer / Bénévole archéologique

I made this watercolour painting of a happy volunteer (my grandson) at the archaeological dig last month on the Ottawa River. I composed it from photos that I took. Admittedly, there's so much to observe when you're at a busy place like this one that photographs help to remember the setup of the site. However, I believe that drawings and paintings have their proper place in recording these events - a photo can record too much (so the artist must simplify certain things and draw the observer's eye to some specific objects, like the tools in my painting) and a photo can also fail to record some things (so the artist can carefully add them, like the background of the Ottawa skyline which was missing in my photos). As I mentioned in my previous posting, this archaeological dig was well organized and hopefully benefited from lots of volunteers. I hope to be back next year!

J'ai fait cette aquarelle d'un bénévole heureux (mon petit-fils) lors des fouilles archéologiques du mois dernier sur la rivière des Outaouais. Je l'ai composé à partir de photos que j'ai prises. Certes, il y a tellement de choses à observer lorsque vous êtes dans un endroit très fréquenté comme celui-ci, car les photos aident à se souvenir de la configuration du site. Cependant, je crois que les dessins et les peintures ont leur place dans l’enregistrement de ces événements - une photo peut enregistrer trop (l’artiste doit donc simplifier certaines choses et attirer l’attention de l’observateur sur certains objets spécifiques, comme les outils de ma peinture) et la photo peut également ne pas enregistrer certaines choses (pour que l'artiste puisse les ajouter avec soin, comme l'arrière-plan de l'horizon d'Ottawa qui manquait dans mes photos). Comme je l'ai mentionné dans mon précédent message, cette fouille archéologique était bien organisée et, espérons-le, a bénéficié de nombreux bénévoles. J'espère être de retour l'année prochaine!
