The neighbourhood in winter / La voisinage en hiver

After all the festivities, it's now a quiet day. Time to relax, pick up the sketchbook, look outside and compose a small pen and ink drawing.

Après toutes les festivités, c'est maintenant une journée calme. Le moment est venu de se détendre, de prendre son carnet de croquis, de regarder dehors et de réaliser un petit dessin à l'encre.

Cobourg Street / La rue Cobourg

Recently, I had another opportunity to do some quick sketching in downtown Ottawa and parked on a part of Coburg Street that borders on the Lowertown neighbourhood. There's a lot of older houses here, some with a lot of character and some that need a little repair. I thought that this street corner would make a good subject for an ink drawing with the snow making everything look so clean. I sketched it in pencil, took some reference photos and finished it at home.

Récemment, j'ai eu l'occasion de faire un croquis rapide au centre-ville d'Ottawa et je me suis stationé sur un coin de la rue Coburg, qui borde le quartier de la Basse-Ville. On y trouve beaucoup de maisons anciennes, certaines pleines de charme, d'autres qui auraient besoin de quelques réparations. J'ai pensé que ce coin de rue ferait un bon sujet pour un dessin à l'encre, la neige rendant le paysage si propre. J'ai fait un croquis au crayon, pris quelques photos de référence et finalisé le dessin chez moi.

The small snowfalls that we've been receiving lately have all accumulated into a nice blanket of snow over the landscape and the thermometer has registered lower than normal for this time of year. Winter has definitely arrived. So last week when I had another occasion to do some plein air sketching, I did it from the comfort of my car. I parked in a neighbourhood of Vanier where I used to live and sketched the Cummings Bridge and North River Road in the foreground. It was a pleasant day and I enjoyed returning to my old neighbourhood. When I returned home, I drew over my rough pencil sketch with ink pens using two different toned inks - one black and another grey. By using the grey in the background, I was hoping to create a sense of depth.

Technical note: The Sakura Gellyroll Moonlight pens are impressive. Not only do they offer a variety of grey tones but they are opaque which allows you to draw over black lines! The Gellyroll Moonlight series of pens also come in different colours, some with a metalic finish.

 

Les petites chutes de neige que nous avons reçues ces derniers temps se sont accumulées pour former un beau manteau neigeux sur le paysage et le thermomètre affiche des températures inférieures aux normales saisonnières. L'hiver est bel et bien arrivé. La semaine dernière, profitant d'une nouvelle occasion pour faire du croquis en plein air, je l'ai fait confortablement installé dans ma voiture. Je me suis stationné dans un quartier de Vanier où j'habitais autrefois et j'ai dessiné le pont Cummings et le chemin North River. C'était une belle journée et j'ai pris plaisir à retourner dans mon ancien quartier. De retour chez moi, j'ai repassé mon croquis au crayon à l'encre, en utilisant deux encres de tons différents : une noire et une grise. En utilisant le gris en arrière-plan, je souhaitais créer une impression de profondeur.

Note technique : Les stylos Sakura Gellyroll Moonlight sont impressionnants. Non seulement qu'ils offrent une variété de nuances de gris, mais leur opacité permet de repasser sur les lignes noirs ! La gamme Gellyroll Moonlight existe également en différentes couleurs, certaines avec une finition métallisée.
