Lac Leamy trail around the lake in winter / Sentier du lac Leamy autour du lac en hiver

About a week ago, I took some photographs and painted this scene from a trail in the Lac Leamy Park that winds around the lake. As you can see, winter was still very much present and the snow was thick and abundant for cross-country skiers. In about another week, I expect that this scene will be very different as the daytime temperatures are rising continually and the sun lasts longer each day. With the record amounts of snow and precipitation that we've received this winter, there's a possibility that there will be flooding in this area. But I certainly hope for the best.

Il y a environ une semaine, j'ai pris des photos et peint cette scène d'un sentier du parc du lac Leamy qui serpente autour du lac. Comme vous pouvez le voir, l'hiver était encore bien présent et la neige était épaisse et abondante pour les skieurs de fond. Dans environ une semaine, je m'attends à ce que cette scène soit très différente car les températures diurnes augmentent continuellement et le soleil dure plus longtemps chaque jour. Avec les quantités record de neige et de précipitations que nous avons reçues cet hiver, il est possible qu'il y ait des inondations dans cette région. Mais j'espère certainement pour le meilleur.

Wild garden and chickadee / Jardin sauvage et mésange

At my cottage, I have a few wild or tangled gardens that I tend to enjoy. By 'wild garden' I mean a garden which began as an attempt to grow some ornamental plants in the forest but then they became overgrown with wild plants. In this scene you may notice that a raspberry-like plant (known as a thimble berry) has returned to take its place next to some tiger lilies. Sometimes I like the effect that this can create; it's certainly colourful and the birds seem to like it. I had fun creating this painting. I began by brushing over an old painting of flowers that I wasn't too happy with. (It was on a very nice canvas that I didn't want to throw away.) Then I assembled some reference photos and composed this partially imaginary scene.

À mon chalet, j'ai quelques jardins sauvages que j'ai tendance à apprécier. Par « jardin sauvage », j'entends un jardin qui a commencé comme une tentative de faire pousser des plantes ornementales dans la forêt, mais ensuite elles ont été envahi par des plantes sauvages. Dans cette scène, vous remarquerez peut-être qu'une plante ressemblant à une framboise (connue sous le nom de baie de dé à coudre) revient prendre sa place à côté de quelques lys tigrés. Parfois, j'aime l'effet que cela peut créer; c'est certainement coloré et les oiseaux semblent l'aimer. Je me suis amusé à créer ce tableau. J'ai commencé par effacer un vieux tableau de fleurs dont je n'étais pas trop content. (C'était sur une très belle toile que je ne voulais pas jeter.) Ensuite, j'ai assemblé quelques photos de référence et composé cette scène partiellement imaginaire.

Tiger lilies with bright background / Lis de tigre avec fond clair

Tiger lilies are a common perennial which are found almost everywhere in the Ottawa-Gatineau region. Some people call them 'ditch lilies' because they can be found on the side of the road where nothing else grows. They are very invasive and hard to remove once established. I have a liking for them because they are so hardy and provide a nice splash of colour in the landscape. This oil painting is part of a series on plants that grow in my region.

Le lys tigré est une plante vivace commune que l'on retrouve un peu partout dans la région d'Ottawa-Gatineau. Certaines personnes les appellent « lis des fossés » parce qu'ils peuvent être trouvés sur le bord de la route où rien d'autre ne pousse. Ils sont très envahissants et difficiles à éliminer une fois établis. J'ai un penchant pour eux parce qu'ils sont si robustes et fournissent une belle touche de couleur dans le paysage. Cette peinture à l'huile fait partie d'une série sur les plantes qui poussent dans ma région.

Pedestrian bridge in Lac Leamy Park / Pont piétonnier au parc du lac Leamy

There are several pedestrian bridges in Gatineau's Lac Leamy Park which allow access to sections of the park that would be otherwise blocked. From my observations, these small bridges are used regularly by all sorts of people walking, skiing, cycling and commuting to work. They're a great public asset. My painting is based on a photo that I took at the beginning of winter. From time to time, I walk to this location from my home for exercise and inspiration.

Il y a plusieurs ponts piétonniers dans le parc du lac Leamy à Gatineau qui permettent d'accéder à des sections du parc qui seraient autrement bloquées. D'après mes observations, ces petits ponts sont utilisés régulièrement par toutes sortes de personnes marchant, skiant, faisant du vélo et se rendant au travail. Ils sont un grand bien public. Ma peinture est basée sur une photo que j'ai prise au début de l'hiver. De temps en temps, je me rends à pied à cet endroit de chez moi pour faire de l'exercice et m'inspirer.

Another stream in winter / Un autre ruisseau en hiver

It seems at this time of year, I have a tendency to paint scenes of streams flowing through snowy landscapes. I guess that I could do worse. Having taken a walk yesterday in my favorite local park - Lac Leamy - I took a photo of a small stream meandering through the forest and I painted it today while waiting for the snow plough to clean our street (and leave a heavy snowbank for me to clear). I find it appealing to see water flowing in these frigid scenes because it reminds me that the miracle of spring is only a few weeks away. Let the magic begin!

Il semble qu'à cette période de l'année, j'ai tendance à peindre des scènes de ruisseaux traversant des paysages enneigés. Je suppose que je pourrais faire pire. Après avoir promené hier dans mon parc local préféré - le Lac Leamy - j'ai pris une photo d'un petit ruisseau serpentant à travers la forêt et je l'ai peint aujourd'hui en attendant que le chasse-neige nettoie notre rue (et me laisse un lourd banc de neige pour pelter). Je trouve attrayant de voir de l'eau couler dans ces scènes glaciales car cela me rappelle que le miracle du printemps n'est qu'à quelques semaines. Que la magie commence!
