Shinny on Brown's Inlet / Shinny sur Brown's Inlet

For those wondering, ‘shinny’ is an informal game of hockey that’s played on an ice rink on skates, or sometimes just on the street in boots. It’s also known as pick-up hockey or street hockey and doesn’t require a lot of skill or organization. I recall playing it on the street when I was a kid; whenever a car came down the road, someone would yell and we’d move our goal posts and wait until it was safe to play again. This painting is of a game of shinny which is being played on Brown’s Inlet near the Rideau Canal in Ottawa. The inlet is like a large pond which is nestled in a very pretty community between Lansdowne Park and Dow’s Lake. I made this painting based on a photo published on Flickr by Will, a local photographer. He caught the action at a perfect moment as well as the neighbourhood towards the end of a day. With an inspirational photograph such as this, I couldn’t resist attempting a painting.

Pour ceux qui se demandent, le mot « shinny » en anglais signifie un jeu de hockey informel qui se joue sur une patinoire sur des patins, ou parfois simplement dans la rue en bottes. Il est également connu sous le nom de hockey de la rue et ne nécessite pas beaucoup de compétences ou d'organisation. Je me souviens d'y avoir joué dans la rue quand j'étais enfant; chaque fois qu'une voiture arrivait sur la rue, quelqu'un criait et nous déplacions nos poteaux de but et attendions qu'il soit secure de jouer à nouveau. Cette peinture est d'un jeu de shinny qui se joue sur Brown's Inlet près du canal Rideau à Ottawa. L'endroit se caractérise par un grand étang qui est niché dans une très jolie communauté entre le parc Lansdowne et le lac Dow. J'ai réalisé ce tableau à partir d'une photo publiée sur Flickr par Will, un photographe local. Il a capté l'action à un moment parfait ainsi que le quartier vers la fin d'une journée. Avec une photographie inspirante comme celle-ci, je n'ai pas pu résister à créér une peinture.
