Redone: Apple tree in backyard / Refait : Pommier dans mon court

The joy in using an iPad Pro with Procreate for digital sketching and painting is that your image is completely malleable . . . just like silly putty. If you don't like a background, you can easily change it. If you don't like the colours, you can immediately alter the saturation or hues. If you want to add an object to the scene, just drop in a new layer. Etc. If a composition is planned with enough separate layers, there's no problem in making all sorts of modifications. Today when I looked at my previously posted image of the apple tree in my backyard, I was unhappy with the background. I decided to change it so that it more closely reflected the real backyard. No problem. Chuckling to myself, I thought that I could even create the same scene for each season!

Si vous n'aimez pas un fond, vous pouvez facilement le changer. Si vous n'aimez pas les couleurs, vous pouvez immédiatement modifier la saturation ou les teintes. Si vous souhaitez ajouter un objet à la scène, déposez simplement un nouveau couche. Etc. Si une composition est planifiée avec suffisamment de couches séparées, toutes sortes de modifications sont possibles. Aujourd'hui, lorsque j'ai jeté un coup d'œil à l'image précédemment publiée du pommier dans ma cour, je n'étais pas satisfait du fond. J'ai décidé de le changer pour qu'il reflète plus fidèlement la véritable arrière-cour. Aucun problème. Je pensais que je pourrais même créer la même scène pour chaque saison!

The weather has been fairly cold lately and the skies have been overcast. It's not the ideal time to go out and sketch or photograph the landscape. So, one afternoon I took my iPad Pro and began to sketch our apple tree in the backyard from my window. The tree is an interesting subject with its limbs stretching out in different directions. To my surprise as I was drawing, a young rabbit came into the yard and ate some of the bird seeds that had fallen on the ground. It hunted around for a while and wasn't the least bit frightened - a good model for a sketch!

Le temps a été assez froid ces derniers temps et le ciel était couvert. Ce n’est pas le moment idéal pour sortir dessiner ou photographier le paysage. Alors, un après-midi, j'ai pris mon iPad Pro et j'ai commencé à dessiner notre pommier dans la cour de ma fenêtre. L'arbre est un sujet intéressant avec ses branches qui s'étendent dans différentes directions. À ma grande surprise alors que je dessinais, un jeune lapin entra dans la cour et mangea quelques-unes des graines pour oiseaux tombées au sol. Il a cherché dans le court pendant un moment et n'était pas le moins du monde effrayé - un bon modèle pour un croquis!

Deer at dusk on a winter's evening / Les cerfs au crépuscule un soir d'hiver

At this time of year in the Upper Gatineau Valley, there are few people in the cottages and houses that are found along the lakes and in the forested areas. It's very tranquil. Yes, there's the occasional ski-do that may pass by on the lake but otherwise it is a silent world. While taking a walk before supper one evening, my daughter and I disturbed a small group of deer that were foraging for food. I quickly took a photo thinking it might be a good subject for a sketch.

À cette époque de l'année, dans la Haute vallée de la Gatineau, il y a peu de monde dans les chalets et les maisons qui se trouvent le long des lacs et dans les endroits boisées. C'est très tranquille. Oui, il y a parfois des ski-dos qui peuvent passer sur le lac, mais sinon, le monde est silencieux. Un soir, en me promenant avant le souper, ma fille et moi avons dérangé un petit groupe de cerfs qui cherchaient de la nourriture. J'ai rapidement pris une photo en pensant que ce serait un bon sujet pour un croquis.

Library of Parliament interior / L'intérieur de la Bibiliothèque du Parlement

As I've mentioned in recent postings, the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa will be undergoing extensive renovations for the next ten years or so. One of the unfortunate results will be that the Library of Parliament will be soon closing. As you can see in this sketch I made of its interior, the Library is an enormous structure with a domed ceiling soaring far above a marble statue of a young Queen Victoria  made in 1871 by Marshall Wood. Designed by Thomas Fuller, the Library is a octagonal structure with sixteen flying buttresses supporting the walls and roof. Trying to sketch its interior certainly tested my skills and understanding of perspective; I think geometry overtakes perspective.

Comme je l'ai mentionné récemment, les édifices du Parlement à Ottawa feront l'objet d'importants travaux de rénovation au cours des dix prochaines années environ. L'un des résultats malheureux sera que la Bibliothèque du Parlement fermera bientôt. Comme vous pouvez voir dans ce croquis que j'ai fait de son intérieur, la Bibliothèque est une énorme structure avec un plafond en forme de dôme s'élevant bien au-dessus d'une statue en marbre représentant une jeune reine Victoria réalisée en 1871 par Marshall Wood. Conçue par Thomas Fuller, la Bibliothèque est une structure octogonale avec seize arcs-boutants soutenant les murs et le toit. Essayer de dessiner son intérieur a certainement mis à l'épreuve mes compétences et ma compréhension de la perspective; je pense que la géométrie dépasse la perspective.
