I like to travel slowly on my lake with my pontoon boat and take in the sights. You never know what you can see - a large snapping turtle swimming by, a school of large fish, or some interesting waterfowl (ducks, loons, bitterns, herons). Recently I spied a large heron perched on a log. Trying to get as close as possible, I turned off the motor on the boat and drifted towards it. However, there's always a point where you're too close and the herons flies off. Its great to see it spread its large wings and take flight. Anyhow, this is a painting that came from this experience. The sun was so bright on the heron and the log that details were hard to make out. I purposely tried to capture this effect in my watercolour.

Beautiful. Nice contrast where the heron sticks out.
