Baie Paul in November / La baie de Paul en novembre
November is one of the more challenging months of the year in Canada with its darker and colder days which usually lack snow to brighten up the landscape. This is a scene on a lake in the Upper Gatineau Valley in Quebec at the end of a mostly cloudy day. The lake hadn't froze yet but had a light 'crust' of ice along the shoreline. It's very quiet at this time of year as most of the seasonal cottagers have left and the ski-dos won't make their noisy appearance until a good blanket of snow and ice is on the lake. I painted this image with gouache paints and then added ink (which is the reverse order that I usually use). This technique allowed me to develop the silhouettes of the trees on the shoreline.
Gouache painting with ink in a Fabriano watercolour sketchbook, 26 x 19 cm (10.25 x 7.5 inches).
