Island visit / Visite de l'île

 

There are several islands on Grand Lac Rond (a lake in the Upper Gatineau Valley) but none are inhabited because they're relatively small. I don't believe that any of them have a name although there's one that my family calls 'Bird Shit Island' because ... well, you can guess the reason without much effort. Most of the islands on the lake are rock outcroppings that can support some vegetation. The one in my painting is gifted with a lot of mature trees, bushes and plants. It's a nice place to visit. When the water level is normal, you can paddle around it in a kayak or canoe and maybe spy a blue heron, some turtles or a bunch of wild irises growing near the shoreline just like my daughter did. I was inspired to create this painting from photos that I took. On a more technical note, the stretched format of the canvas allowed me to create more of a panoramic view of the landscape than I would have otherwise been able to do with a 3:4 or 4:5 format. I've attached a small video which demonstrates my simple process step-by-step.

Il y a plusieurs îles sur le Grand Lac Rond (un lac de la haute vallée de la Gatineau) mais aucune n'est habitée parce que ces îles sont relativement petites. Je ne crois pas qu'aucun d'entre eux ait un nom, bien qu'il y en ait un que ma famille appelle «Bird Shit Island» parce que ... eh bien, vous pouvez deviner la raison sans trop d'effort. La plupart des îles du lac sont des affleurements rocheux qui peuvent supporter une certaine végétation. Celui de ma peinture est doté de nombreux arbres matures, buissons et plantes. C'est un endroit agréable à visiter. Lorsque le niveau de l'eau est normal, vous pouvez pagayer autour de lui en kayak ou en canoë et peut-être espionner un héron bleu, des tortues ou un bouquet d'iris sauvages poussant près du rivage, tout comme ma fille l'a fait. J'ai été inspiré pour créer cette peinture à partir de photos que j'ai prises. Sur une note plus technique, le format étiré de la toile m'a permis de créer davantage une vue panoramique du paysage que je n'aurais pu le faire autrement avec un format 3:4 ou 4:5. J'ai joint une petite vidéo qui montre mon processus simple étape par étape.
