Brewery Creek bikepath / Le sentier du vélo du ruisseau de la Brasserie

 

About a month ago, I took my last bike ride of the year and followed Brewery Creek in downtown Gatineau. For about a century, this creek has been popular with naturalists who liked to observe the variety of birds and wildlife that live along its shoreline. (In 1947, for instance, British High Commissioner Malcolm Macdonald published The Birds of Brewery Creek.) Today it still attracts a lot of people who enjoy nature walks, however this urban parkland has experienced the usual blight associated with downtowns - garbage dumped in the watershed, homeless people camping along its shoreline, etc. Despite these challenges, the creek is still a lovely place to visit, especially along the bike path that stretches along most of its length. This painting is situated downstream from the old waterworks building (presently the restaurant/micro-brewery, Les Brasseurs du Temps). The shoreline is marshy with trees overhanging the creek and usually a lot of waterfowl paddling in the water.

Il y a environ un mois, j'ai fait ma dernière randonnée à vélo de l'année et j'ai suivi le ruisseau de la Brasserie au centre-ville de Gatineau. Depuis environ un siècle, ce ruisseau est populaire auprès des naturalistes qui aiment observer la variété des oiseaux et de la faune qui vivent le long de son rivage. (En 1947, par exemple, le haut-commissaire britannique Malcolm Macdonald a publié The Birds of Brewery Creek.) Aujourd'hui, il attire encore beaucoup de gens qui aiment les promenades dans la nature, mais ce parc urbain a subi le fléau habituel associé aux centres-villes - les ordures jetées dans le bassin versant, les sans-abri campent le long de son rivage, etc. Malgré ces défis, le ruisseau reste un endroit charmant à visiter, surtout le long de la piste cyclable qui s'étend sur presque toute sa longueur. Ce tableau est situé en aval de l'ancien bâtiment de l'aqueduc (actuellement le restaurant / micro-brasserie, Les Brasseurs du Temps). Le rivage est marécageux avec des arbres surplombant le ruisseau et généralement beaucoup d'oiseaux aquatiques pagayant dans l'eau.
