Pointe Gatineau and the Lady Aberdeen Bridge / Pointe Gatineau et le pont Lady Aberdeen

I made this ink sketch from photos that I took from a rugged bike path in Lac Leamy Park. The view from here is great. You can see the old Lady Aberdeen Bridge (built 1895) and the St Francis de Sales Church (built in 1886) in Pointe Gatineau. The Gatineau and Ottawa Rivers meet at this spot and provide spectacular vistas of escarpments, forested parks, sailboats, and the city centre. The thing that always impressed me about this location was that, despite being in the middle of a large city, you were surrounded by nature and could have thought civilization was far far away.

J'ai fait ce dessin à l'encre à partir de photos que j'ai prises d'une piste cyclable dans le parc du Lac Leamy. La vue d'ici est superbe. Vous pouvez voir le vieux pont Lady Aberdeen (construit en 1895) et l’église St Francis de Sales (construite en 1886) à Pointe Gatineau. Les rivières Gatineau et Ottawa se rejoignent à cet endroit et offrent des vues spectaculaires sur les escarpements, les parcs boisés, les voiliers et le centre-ville. Ce qui m'a toujours impressionné à propos de cet endroit, c'est que, malgré le fait d'être au milieu d'une grande ville, vous êtes entouré par la nature et auriez pu penser que la civilisation était très loin.

Archaeological dig / La fouille archéologique

Its quite a thrill to dig up pieces of pottery that date back 6000 years. This is what a group of volunteers under the direction of archaeologist, Ian Badgley, are doing now along the shoreline of the Ottawa River in the Leamy Lake Park. The dig has been organized during the month of August for several years now. Its slow work under a hot sun but some of the results have been encouraging. I sketched this scene en pleine air in pencil and then inked it in the air conditioned comfort of home.

C'est un véritable plaisir de déterrer des pièces de poterie datant de 6000 ans. C’est ce que fait actuellement un groupe de benévoles sous la direction de l’archéologue Ian Badgley, le long du littoral de la rivière des Outaouais, dans le parc du lac Leamy. La fouille a été organisée au cours du mois d'août depuis plusieurs années. C'est du travail lent sous un chaud soleil mais certains des résultats ont été encourageants. J'ai dessiné cette scène à l'air libre au crayon, puis encré dans le confort climatisé de ma maison.
