Cayo Coco lifeguard / Sauveteur à Cayo Coco

While spending time on the beach in Cayo Coco (Cuba), I made a number of plein air drawings. This one was of a lifeguard named Luis who chatted with my wife and I from time to time. The day after I finished this sketch I gave it to him, much to his pleasant surprise. I have to admit that its very satisfying for an artist to see someone's immediate reaction to a painting.

On a technical note I wanted to mention that for quite a while I've been using watercolour paper which has little cotton content. Over time I got used to this material. However, for this sketch I used 100% cotton paper and ... what a difference! The paint pigments were nicely absorbed in the paper and the results were incredibly better. Although 100% cotton paper costs more, it's much more satisfying to use.

Pendant que je passais du temps sur la plage de Cayo Coco (Cuba), j’ai fait plusieurs dessins en plein air. Celui-ci était d'un sauveteur nommé Luis qui parlait avec ma femme et moi de temps en temps. Le lendemain, j'ai terminé ce croquis que je lui ai donné, à sa plus agréable surprise. Je dois admettre que c'est très satisfaisant pour un artiste de voir la réaction immédiate de quelqu'un face à une peinture.
Sur une note technique, je voulais mentionner que cela fait un certain temps que j'utilise du papier à l'aquarelle qui contient peu de coton. Au fil du temps, je me suis habitué à ce matériel. Cependant, pour ce croquis, j'ai utilisé du papier 100% coton et ... quelle différence! Les pigments de peinture étaient bien absorbés dans le papier et les résultats étaient incroyablement meilleurs. Bien que le papier 100% coton coûte plus cher, son utilisation est beaucoup plus satisfaisante.
