Library of Parliament carving 2 - The Cockatrice / Bibliothèque du Parlement sculpture 2 - La Cockatrice

Here's another sketch from my series of wood carvings from the Library of Parliament. I call this one The Cockatrice. It's a mythical creature similar to a basilisk with the body of a dragon or serpent and head of a rooster. Legend said that it could kill people by looking, touching or breathing on them. It was a good symbol to place at the entrance of the Library reminding users to be careful. This is another illustration of the imagination of the carvers who worked on these sculptures. So far, I have not been able to find much information on who they were or what their backgrounds were. There is some information on the present Dominion Sculptor (Phil White) here, the House of Commons' chamber sculptors (most notably Elzéar Soucy) here, and some photos of the Library carvings here. It seems to me that their stories would be interesting to recount.
