Solitary skater / Patineur solitaire

Winterlude starts this weekend and the Rideau Canal skateway in Ottawa has reopened after a couple of weeks of warm weather. At least warm enough to melt ice. However, the weatherman promises near perfect weather for skating this weekend with daytime highs around -5C and night lows of -15C. Regrettably, this is still a little too crisp for me to sketch outdoors.
Technical note: I made this oil painting alla prima in the comfort of my home from a beautiful photo that Tony Caldwell took on January 31 which was published in the Ottawa Citizen. I usually scan my smaller watercolour sketches but took a photo of this painting at night. The reproduction didn't come out nearly as well as I had hoped - too much glare from the wet oil paint, and colours that were too warm from house lighting. (I'll try to copy my painting again at some point in the future during the daylight.)
Oil painting, 30.5 x 40.6 cm (12 x 16 inches).

Peinture à l'huile, 30,5 x 40,6 cm (12 x 16 pouces).

Great painting Michael. In this painting your use of your vibrant colours really comes to life, I especially like the sky, It has a van Gogh quality. Even the treatment of the trees (almost blurred, you can't see forms in detail, in twilight) is effective.
Keep on going!
